1. About Us : i. Who we are/Welcome Letter from the ED

Thank you for your interest in Highlands Presbyterian Camp & Retreat Center! Since 1945, our facility has been a blessing to campers, families, church groups, school groups and many others!

Highlands is operated by the Presbytery of Plains and Peaks and the Presbytery of Denver and provides programming and facilities for individuals and congregations of the Presbyterian Church (USA). We also serve many other denominations and not-for-profit groups.

With a wide range of facilities--from our beautiful Retreat Center to our winter and summer cabins—we can meet a variety of needs. I hope that you will have the opportunity to enjoy this majestic site, and our gracious hospitality soon!

Grace and Peace,

Maria Shupe

Executive Director

ii. Mission Statement/History The mission of Highlands is to provide gracious hospitality & quality Christian programs in a majestic mountain setting & to nurture spiritual renewal & transformation in a safe & inclusive environment.

A Brief History of Highlands In the early 1900s, Miss August Mengedoht managed a cluster of summer rental cottages close to the mountain community of Allenspark. She probably never dreamed that many of her cabins would still be in use 100 years later!

After World War II, convinced of the positive benefits of camping and outdoor recreation for children and youth, Presbyterians in northern Colorado began searching for a permanent camping facility. The Rev. Andrew Hollars, and his daughter Ola, found just the right place. The presbytery purchased Miss Augusta’s 49 acre mountain retreat and ten cabins in 1945, and Highlands Camp was born.

Little by little, Highlands has grown. As neighboring properties have become available, the church has sought to purchase them, both in order to preserve the beauty of our site, but also to expand the options available for our programs and our friends. Many of the facilities that Highlands now uses—whether it is one of the lodges or our large meadow—have been added slowly to our site through the years. In 2002 we added our new Retreat Center. This beautiful facility includes 24 sleeping rooms, an Administrative suite, reception lobby, conference room, and kitchen and dining facilities.

Today, Highlands Presbyterian Camp and Retreat Center encompasses 285 acres, has 42 buildings, horse facilities, a low-elements challenge course, and access to the wilderness areas of the Roosevelt National Forest and Rocky Mountain National Park.

Highlands is extensively used by Presbyterians of all ages from the Front Range, high plains, and Nebraska panhandle. It serves as a valuable extension of our region’s local Christian Education, evangelism, and ministry programs. Highlands is used by various nonprofit organizations, churches of many denominations, public schools and family groups.

Guests and Retreats i. Accommodations 1. Retreat Center

Completed in August 2002, the 24-bedroom, 105-bed retreat center offers accommodations for our adult guests. The center, as well as the attached dining/meeting facility, is fully accessible. It can host up to 125 people.

Each room comfortably accommodates guests primarily in full-length twin beds, with some queen- sized Murphy beds and Flex-Steel sofa sleepers available. Rooms can be arranged for couples, if desired. Every bedroom has its own bathroom, with the sinks and mirrors, shower, and toilet areas all separate.

There are many possibilities for housing your group in the Retreat Center: o We have two types of rooms: standard bedrooms, which can accommodate 4-6 people each, and our suite-style arrangements that can accommodate 12-16 people in a 3-room configuration. The center room has a space that can be used as a small meeting area. o On the garden level, there are three 3-room suites; the center room of each suite features a walk-out patio with a grand view of Mt. Meeker, a sitting area, and two sofa-sleepers, in addition to four full-length twin beds. Our garden level can host as many as 48 persons. o On the main level, there are three 3-room suites; the center room features a Murphy bed, a sitting area, and a balcony looking toward Mt. Meeker. Additionally, there are six standard bedrooms. The upper level can sleep up to 77 persons.

Regardless of size, we will book your group into the configuration of rooms that will provide the best retreat experience possible. If there is more than one group staying in the Retreat Center, we strive to keep groups in separate portions of the building, so each has the privacy individuals may seek.

Linens are provided for your convenience in the Retreat Center. You will find your bed linens folded neatly in the room. The bathrooms have towels and washcloths as well. In order to keep costs minimal, we ask that guests make their own beds upon arrival and, at the end of their visits, remove sheets and pillowcase from beds.

There are no phones or televisions in the room; however, there is a courtesy phone in the lobby and wireless internet access available in the dining halls and some of the west wing of the Retreat Center. 2. Cabins

While most of our cabins serve our summer camp program during the middle of the summer, they are available for rental throughout the year. Collectively, our cabins can hold 134 in comfort during the winter and can accommodate up to 212 during the summer. Accommodations provide bunk beds, attached modern bathrooms, and heat. Guests using cabin facilities will need to provide their own bedding, towels, and personal toiletries.

Cabin facilities are ideal for retreats such as youth groups, children’s groups, young adults, college retreats, and other gatherings of budget-conscious groups.

We have three types of cabins available: o Rustic Log Cabins: Our log cabins are individually unique and sleep between 8 and 20 people each. They provide many lodging options for your stay. o Dorm-style Cabins: Built in the early 1990s, these cabins have spacious, modern bathrooms and sleep 20 persons each. They also feature meeting space. o Housekeeping Cabins: These cabins accommodate between 12 and 25 persons each. They have kitchens equipped with stove, refrigerator, microwave, and coffee pot, enabling groups to prepare their own meals, if they wish. Each cabin has a meeting room that can hold at least as many people as they sleep. Up o Upon request, a “dish pack” is available for use by a group for a fee.

vi. Activities and Resources Majestic mountain views, tranquil aspen groves, wild animals in their native habitat, starry skies, and vibrant sunrises and sunsets are only a part of the Highlands experience. Located at the foot of Mt. Meeker, our 285 acre site includes a great variety of streams, ridges, meadows, rock outcroppings, aspen groves, and pine forests.

Hiking Trails: Our trails range from a gentle meadow loop to the popular hike to the Hidden Room. For the bold, the nearest ridge provides an excellent sunrise hike to the crosses on top. Most of the hikes on our site will take one to two hours to complete (but they will take as long as you wish if you stop, sit on a rock, and meditate for a while). Within a five minute drive are entrance points for Rocky Mountain National Park, the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, and the Roosevelt National Forest.

Nature Trail: Designed by a qualified naturalist, the Highlands Camp Nature Trail has 20 stations in a wide variety of nature situations. On the trail, you can explore not only meadows and forests, but also stream valleys and beaver ponds. Additionally, we have reference books available for the more than 200 wildflowers that flourish on our site.

Meditation Trail: Our meditation trail, designed by a local pastor, has several stations where you may stop for contemplation or to reflect on our Presbyterian faith symbols.

Indoor/Outdoor Fun: Horseshoe pits, sand volleyball court, softball field, a sledding hill in the winter, Frisbee golf course, ping-pong table, puzzles and table games are all available for use by our guests.

The following features of our site are available for a reasonable fee and must be reserved prior to your arrival. Our facilitators will be on hand for safety and insurance reasons. 2. Challenge Course: We have a 22 element low ropes course designed for numerous group- building activities. Our trained staff can facilitate your use of this excellent resource. Time spent on the Challenge Course can provide a valuable experience in trust, communication, and teamwork for any group. Please inform us of any group needs or concerns, and we will tailor your experience specifically for your group. 3. Climbing Rock: The Boulder County Rock Club declared this the best teaching rock in the county! 4. Canoeing Pond: While it is by no means large, our canoeing pond is definitely sufficient for providing a place to paddle around. This is a place of great fun for families, youth groups, and even adults! 5. Archery 6. Naturalist/Hiking Guide i. 6. Licensure and Accreditation

Staff: Quality staffing is an essential ingredient to a meaningful and safe camping experience. At Highlands, our staff is the main ingredient to providing an important and vital faith-building camping experience. To meet our high standards, staff undergo a criminal background check, and experience an extensive two week training period. Lessons in group-building techniques, leading effective Bible study, and age group development enable them to create a physically, spiritually, emotionally, and socially safe environment. All staff members are American Red Cross Certified in First-Aid and CPR. Additionally, all of our program staff meet the national standards of instructor training by the respective governing board, which include such bodies as the National Association for the Development of Archery, American Red Cross Water Safety Instruction, etc.

Licensure and Accreditation: Highlands is accredited by the American Camp Association and fully licensed as a child care facility by the State of Colorado. To maintain both of these accreditations, Highlands strives to provide the highest level of care and is committed to making sure that all of our participants enjoy a safe and quality program. Highlands prides itself on achieving a perfect score during the American Camp Association’s most recent accreditation visit.

Health Care Administrator: Highlands will have available an on-site health care administrator who is trained in dispensing camper medications and attending to health related issues. In addition to this administrator, Highlands has partnered with a local, Board Certified physician who will be available for advanced medical consultation.

vii. Intergenerational Programs (link to info under Adult/Intergeneration Program??) viii. Camperships Highlands strongly feels that no one should be denied the Christian camping experience due to lack of funding. If costs are prohibitive, please feel welcome to fill out the scholarship form and return it to Highlands.

1. Application (pdf) Link to PDF of Scholarship Form 2. Make a Gift (future link)

4. Supporting the Ministry of Highlands i. Newsletter (PDF Link to current newsletter) Read the latest news from Highlands ii. Supporting the Highlands Ministry 1. Annual Operating Support (including info. on the Mt. Meeker Society)

Each year, Highlands receives generous gifts from individuals and congregations to support the life and ministry of Highlands Presbyterian Camp & Retreat Center! These gifts are vital to our ongoing operation, allowing us to underwrite the cost for every camper who attends summer camp, and well as provide scholarships for those with special needs. These gifts have also made many special projects possible. The generosity of our donors enables us to meet our monthly mortgage interest commitments as well as make principal payments to reduce our debt. Generous donors have also provided new equipment for maintenance, Summer Camp and guest use. We recognize our donors as one expression of our deep gratitude for your commitment to and support for Highlands. The ministry of Highlands has been built on the generous gifts of time, talent and financial resources! If you would like to make a donation, please send it directly to Highlands Presbyterian Camp & Retreat Center or call us to make a credit card donation. Thank you for your support!

The Mount Meeker Society

Members of the Mount Meeker Society are those who haven given $1000.00 or more annually to Highlands Presbyterian Camp and Retreat Center. Each year, in March, we hold a dinner celebrating these donors and the accomplishments their gifts have made possible during the past year. We are grateful to those donors who are able to make such a gift in support of Highlands!

2. Camperships If one were to do a price comparison of similar summer camps in the Rocky Mountain region, one would soon discover that Highlands is surprisingly much more economical than our other friends in camping ministry. But why is this so? It certainly isn’t because we cut corners in programming or staff – because we hire a highly qualified staff that facilitates a top-tier camping program. So, if Highlands is not cutting programming corners, why is the price of camp so reasonable? Ultimately, the reason why Highlands Summer Camp costs less than others around us is because caring donors recognize that the camp experience is invaluable, and desire that no one should be denied the Highlands experience due to cost. In reality, it costs more to operate Highlands Summer Camp than what our camp fees provide, thus our caring donors and supporters actually help subsidize (somewhat substantially!) the cost of summer camp. In addition, the scholarship monies we award on top of the camp subsidy ensure that no child – no matter what financial situation they come from – will be unable to come to camp due to cost!

Highlands would like to thank all of those families and individuals who realize the value of the Highlands experience and help to make it affordable to all!

If you would like to contribute to the Highlands Campership Fund, please send all donations to Highlands Presbyterian Camp & Retreat Center, or call us to make a credit card donation.
