Periodic Table Coloring Activity

Instructions: a. Get two copies of the periodic table and the instruction sheet b. Follow the instructions that follow. Make a legend on the back of your Periodic Table to show what each color represents. c. You may use your book, your notes, the element cards, or the Internet to accomplish this activity. Caution: be sure of the information before coloring d. When coloring, make sure you shade lightly in colored pencil so you can still read everything on your periodic table.

1. Label the periods 1-7 on both copies

2. Label one periodic table “Composition & Phases” and label the other one “Element

Families”

3. Starting with the “composition and phases” periodic table

a. Shade half the box of the two elements that are liquids at room

temperature in light blue

b. Shade half the box of the 11 elements that are gases at room temperature

in light green

c. Shade half the box of the elements that are solid at room temperature in

pink

d. For unknown phase elements, shade half the box in yellow

e. Shade the remaining half of elements that are metals in orange

f. Shade the remaining half of elements that are nonmetals in red

g. Shade the remaining half of elements that are metalloids in purple

h. For unknown composition elements, shade the remaining half light

brown

4. Move on the “element families” periodic table”

a. Shade Hydrogen in gray

b. Shade the Alkali Metals red. Periodic Table Coloring Activity c. Shade the Alkaline Earth Metals orange. d. Shade all the Transition Metals in the middle of the table in yellow. e. Shade the Lanthanide Series half in light blue and half in yellow. f. Shade the Actinide Series half in red-orange and half in yellow. g. Shade the Aluminum Group dark green. h. Shade the Carbon Group dark blue. i. Shade the Nitrogen Group purple. j. Shade the Oxygen Group pink. k. Shade the Halogens light brown. l. Shade the Noble Gases light green. m. Leave the unknowns white
