Access to Learning Fund (ALF)

Each year the Government has provided the University with money called the Access to Learning Fund. The aim of the Fund is to support students in financial hardship to access and remain in higher education. Specifically it is used:

 To assist those who need extra financial help to meet particular costs which are not already being met from statutory (or other) sources of funding and

 To provide emergency payments for unexpected crises

Use the ALF Information Booklet (available from Student Welfare) to check your eligibility.

The Fund has in the past been spent before the end of the academic year.

Turn 2 Us Grants Search Financial assistance and other forms of support are often available from grant- giving organisations, depending on your particular background and circumstances. Our grants search contains a database of over 3500 charitable funds offering welfare and educational grants. EGAS (Family Action) If a student is trying to identify charitable funding for education or training for which they may be eligible to, they should complete the online educational grants search for an instant response. Welfare grants made to low income welfare cases for things like domestic equipment. “Priority Areas Mental Health: ~Adults (over the age of 18) with a clinical diagnosis of a mental health problem. ~Parents and expectant parents (over the age of 18) with a drug or alcohol problem.

Domestic abuse: ~Grants to families or individuals in the first 6 months of fleeing the family home and/or the first 6 months after moving into a new home, or the first 6 months after the perpetrator has left the family home.

Older people: ~Support to promote independence, improve the quality of life and reduce isolation for those aged 60 and over.

Young people (aged 19 to 25): ~Grants to support young people living alone (i.e. not living with friends, family, others, including children).

Sickness/disability: ~Grants to pay for treatment or disability aids.”

Where a grant is made the cheque will be made payable to the referring agency or service/utilities provider. Under no circumstances will cheques be made payable to individuals.

University of Chester Sports Scholarships are available to undergraduate students of the University who can demonstrate active representation at national or international level. University Mission Committee Bursary

The University Mission Committee has limited funds available to award student bursaries in any of the following areas: (a) for student projects and activities, which are consistent with the University's foundational values and mission statement. Educational Foundation of Dr Robert Oldfield Offers grants to students 'towards the cost of university education', but also for travel for educational purposes, books and equipment. To be eligible, students must be born or permanently resident in the Chester District, aged under 25 years and the grants are means tested. www.drrobertoldfield.co.uk/

Horizon Lone parents who are undertaking or planning to undertake education or training that will lead to employment in their chosen field. Applicants must demonstrate a planned course of study to improve their employment prospects. They are living on a low income. This means the applicant will be in receipt of benefits, Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit. As in previous years we expect the number of applications requesting support to exceed the number of awards we are able to make. We will be accepting applications from 1st to 31st July only. Nuffield Foundation Grants We are looking to fund research, development and pilot projects around the theme of student parents. Nurse Aid NurseAid is a registered charity which exists to give financial help to Registered Nurses, Student Nurses and Nursing Auxiliaries in need. www.nurseaid.org.uk

Hockerill Foundation - financial support for teachers in training Web: “Priorities and Criteria

We make grants in the following categories for study in the United Kingdom, with priority given to Religious Education courses.

Gladstone Fellowship Scheme The University is able to award up to eight Gladstone Fellowships per year. These are fully-funded 3 year full time PhD studentships.
