PUTNAM HIGH SCHOOL COURSE SYLLABUS

Title: Physical Education

Length: 1 Semester

Description: This course will introduce the students to new forms of physical exercise as well as enhance skills that have previously been taught. The major emphasis will be to expand the students’ knowledge and skills of a variety of sports and recreational related activities. There will also be a focus on increasing the students’ understanding of health related benefits of fitness and improve the knowledge base of the primary muscle groups. The Connecticut and Putnam High School Physical Fitness Tests will be introduced and administered. A cross-disciplinary approach will be used as often as possible to incorporate the importance of other disciplines. The course will also include a multi- cultural aspect as well.

Performance Objectives: Upon completion of this course, each student will be able to:

1. Describe the importance of a proper warm-up and cool down prior to and after an exercise.

2. Perform a variety of skills in numerous sports and recreational activities.

3. Manage his/her movements so as not to impede another student’s performance.

4. Demonstrate knowledge of the rules of a variety of sports and recreational activities.

5. Describe the importance of a life-long physical activity program.

6. Demonstrate knowledge of how to play and use equipment safely.

7. Demonstrate good sportsmanship during class time.

Method of Assessment: Students will be graded equally by the following:

1. Each student is expected to dress in the appropriately for high school physical education i.e.; sneakers (securely tied) T-shirts/shorts or sweats. YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIAPATE WITHOUT SNEAKERS

2. Each student is expected to participate to the best of his or her ability in every activity to receive full credit for each day. 3. Each student will be expected to cooperate with the teachers and other classmates. Points will be taken off for misbehavior, profanity, and any other type of disruptive behavior. 4. Each student will take a final written and skills exam which will count for 20% of the final grade.

5. Each student may be asked to perform a skills test or written assignment during the term to determine knowledge acquisition and performance enhancement.

6. Non participation will result in loss of credit for the day. After three (3) times parents will be called. If there are 5 non credit days accrued there will be a conference requested with parents and administrators.

7. ABSENT FROM CLASS If student has 5 (five) UNEXCUSED absences from class in a one

quarter they will receives a fifty-five (55) for the quarter.

Students will be allowed to make up unexcused absences after school with teacher by appointment.

8. In the event a student is medically excused from the class for an extended time period they will be given alternative (written) assignments which will be completed in the library or a study hall.

9. Short term medical excuses will be made up with an after school class.

You will be given a grade from 0-10 every class period you are present. 1 pt for being on time 1 pt for being prepared for class 1 pts for warm up activities 3 pts for your behavior during class 4 pts for your effort/participation during class 4pts 100% of class 3pts 75% of class 2 pt 50% of class 1 pt less than 50 % of class 0 pts No participation
