Conahy Notes

HURLING Congratulations to the Conahy Shamrocks Under 13 hurlers who won the Kilkenny Supporters Club Shield at the Lisdowney GAA Club Sevens Tournament on Saturday last. It was a testing afternoon for the young Conahy players as they had to play three games in warm conditions, winning against Barrow Rangers, Tullaroan and Tullogher Rosbercon respectively. Joint team captains Mark Gunner and Jack Murphy received the Kilkenny Supporters Club Shield at the conclusion of the games. Congratulations to all the players and the team mentors.

The intermediate hurlers were once again luckless as they lost out in Lisdowney in their latest game in the Aylward Cup played in the Polo Grounds on Tuesday night last. The exchanges were close throughout the first half, so much so that the scores were level at 0-7 apiece at half-time. A goal midway through the second half from Paul Buggy gave Conahy a 1-12 to 0-9 lead and should have been the start of a run towards victory, but it was the visitors who dominated from that point on. Though Conahy tried manfully to the end, Lisdowney were by far the stronger in the closing minutes, eventually winning out by 3-14 to 1-13. Conahy will face Graigue- Ballycallan on this Friday night at 7.00 p.m. in Clara in their final league game. Though the result will not alter Conahy’s league position, they will now their first round championship opponents following the game.

The under-16 hurlers played out a thrilling draw with Cloneen/Railyard in the opening round of the Roinn C championship in Muckalee on Wednesday night last. The sides shared scores throughout the opening quarter until Mark Gunner scored Conahy’s first goal. But a physically stronger Cloneen/Railyard were on top for the remainder of the half, and by the half-time whistle they led by 1-8 to 1-3. Conahy put in a tremendous performance in the third quarter of the game, and they received their reward with a great goal from Robbie Dooley. However, when Cloneen/Railyard managed to score a late free to take the lead once again, it looked like Conahy would suffer a heartbreaking loss, but Karl Downey showed great composure in scoring a last gasp free to secure Conahy a share of the spoils.
