Walters (’06), Member-at-Large Herrmann-Josef Seideneck President’s Message Dear Members and Friends of the Jaspers Society, I trust that, when this message reaches you, the snow in New England will have be- gun to melt and we can welcome a new and glorious Red Sox season! The 2004-2005 has been a busy and productive academic year for KJSNA, with many stimulating challenging presentations at the divisional meetings of the APA. The quantity and quality of response has led the new chairman of the APA Commit- tee for International Cooperation, Ernie Lepore, to continue our collaboration – to- gether with the Hannah Arendt Circle – in the coming academic year, 2005-2006. The call for papers (included here) can also be found at the KJSNA website, under the new and able direction of Helmut Wautischer. Please see the subdirectories at: www.bu.edu/paideia It is also our intent to began a vigorous on-line publication project at this website, where the work of scholars contributing to KJSNA can be posted in a format similar to that of the archived papers of the Twentieth World Congress of Philosophy (an- other subdirectory at the above website). During the coming months, I will be making a special attempt to encourage younger scholars to participate in KJSNA and to assume leadership roles in our society. I hope that you will assist me in this important effort by identifying these individuals and bringing them to my attention. Finally, special congratulations to Greg Walters and Kurt Salamun for the soon to appear collection: Karl Jaspers’s Philosophy: Expositions & Interpretations, forthcom- ing from Humanities Press later this year. Concern was expressed about the dwindling dues payments.

1 Raymond Langley was elected for a term on the Executive Committee, replacing Joseph Koterski, who was not a candidate for re-election. CALL FOR PAPERS:

The Karl Jaspers Society of North America and the Hannah Arendt Circle invite paper proposals on the topic:

“Philosophy, Religion, and Politics”

Owing to the outstanding quality of papers submitted in 2004-2005, the executive committees of both KJSNA and HAC invite proposals on the same topic for presentation at the annual meetings of the American Philosophical Association in 2005 and 2006. The December (2005) meeting of Eastern Division will be in New York (New York Hilton), the March (2006) meeting of the Pacific Division will be in Portland, Oregon, and the April (2006) meeting Central Division will be in Chicago (Palmer House). Special attention will be given to paper proposals dealing with, but not limited to, the philoso- phies of Jaspers and Arendt, and to proposals addressing religious values, beliefs, and ideolo- gies as they have a bearing on social and political philosophy and theology. Such proposals might address such topics as radical evil in Kant, the banality of evil in Arendt, WMD in Jaspers, the prophetic consciousness in Reinhold Niebuhr, various aspects of “Just War Theo- ry” and “Stateless Terrorism,” and the changing faces of liberalism and conservatism in our time. Both KJSNA and HAC plan to launch an “on-line” publication project in conjunction with the site containing the papers of the 20th World Congress of Philosophy. Papers delivered in 2004- 2006 will be considered for posting at this site.
