2011-2012 Research Incentive and Development Program Announcement

Overview The College of Arts and Humanities’ Office of Research is pleased to announce that with the combined contributions of the CAH Dean’s Office, the Provost’s Office, and the Office of Research and Commercialization, there is a total of $125,000 that will be used for funding faculty research and creative work in the College of Arts and Humanities. A peer-review committee will recommend award recipients. Final decisions regarding awards will be made by the Dean of CAH and distributed based on available dollars. Funds will be managed through the CAH Research Office.

Faculty Eligibility Interdisciplinary research proposals are encouraged. Research partners may be from any UCF unit or from external colleges/universities or companies but the lead PI must be an eligible faculty member in the College of Arts & Humanities. Eligible CAH faculty must be full-time and hold one of the following ranks:

● Tenured or tenure-earning Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor ● Permanent Instructor ● Multi-Year Visiting Instructor or faculty member of higher visiting rank who is currently in the first or second year of a multi-year (3+ years) appointment

Purposes of Awards The primary purpose of this award program is to support and stimulate activity leading to proposal submission for externally funded grants. The secondary purpose is to promote and support research and creative projects that are not likely to be funded by external sources.

● At least 75% of total funds are available for research that leads to external funding agency submission (Type I Award) ● Up to 25% of total funds are available for research publication, conference presentation, and creative projects (Type II Award)

Number of Awards and Award Amounts The number of awards will be determined by the selection committee, but the target is a minimum of 10 awards for external funding and 5 for publications and creative projects.

Submission Information An original, signed copy of your program application form must be delivered to CAH by 5:00 p.m. on October 14, 2011. All sections of your proposal, including the application form, are to be submitted by e-mail to [email protected] by 5:00 p.m. on October 14, 2011.

All applicants will be notified of the status of their proposals by November 15, 2011.

Funds distributed must be used by June 15, 2012.

Type I - Research Project Requirements: Research projects are intended to enhance external funding possibilities and lead to external grant applications for the College of Arts and Humanities and the University of Central Florida. This research program is open to full-time CAH faculty in instructor, tenure- line/tenured positions, and multiple-year visiting positions at the level of instructor or higher who are in the first or second year of a multi-year (at least 3 year) position. Interdisciplinary research proposals are encouraged. Research partners may be from any UCF unit or from external colleges/universities or companies but the lead PI must be an eligible faculty member in the College of Arts & Humanities.

Most awards are expected to fall between $8,000 and $12,000. Some examples of allowable expenses are hourly OPS and students, GRAs with tuition support, consultants, supplies, equipment, travel, and participant support costs. Some prohibited purchases are non-travel related food, alcohol, personal items, and incentive awards. Funding may not be used for faculty salary, overloads, adjunct replacement costs, or course buyouts.

An original, signed CAH Research Development Program Application is due to the CAH Dean’s Office by October 14, 2011 at 5:00 PM. Proposals must be submitted by 10/14/11 at 5:00 p.m. via email to [email protected]. Proposals cannot exceed 20 pages and must include a copy of the completed application form and:

§ Section 1: Research Problem or Activity - Statement of the problem or activity § Section 2: Research Project - Work to be accomplished, research design and methodology, if appropriate, and associated time frame § Section 3: Budget - A budget detailing the kind and amount of expenditures to be made using the categories: OPS, Equipment, Travel, and Other Expenses § Section 4: Future Plans - Evidence of continuity of work and potential for future funding § Section 5: Resumes - Current resumes/vitae for all PIs; not to exceed 2 pages each § Section 6: Appendix (optional) - Any additional information of use to the review committee

Award Requirements:  A signed 2011-2012 CAH Research Incentive and Development Award Agreement prior to starting activity  Activity can start upon notification of receipt of the agreement form  Attendance at all CAH Research Development Workshops during spring semester  A brief presentation about your award activity in spring term 2012  Funds must be spent by 6/15/2012  Activity must be completed by 7/31/2012  A final Project report within 30 days of completion and no later than 07/31/2012  A final External Submission Report concerning pending status or results of your externally submitted research proposal(s) by June 7, 2013  Acknowledgement of funding from the College of Arts & Humanities, the Office of the Provost, and the Office of Research and Commercialization on any and all media or publications generated

Faculty who submit an external proposal based on their Type I Research Incentive and Development Program funding between January 1, 2012 and September 30, 2013 are eligible for a Research Scholar’s Stipend between $800 and $1,500 from the CAH Research Office.

2 Type II - Research Publication and Creative Project Awards -- Travel, Conference, and Presentation Requirements: Travel, conference, and presentation awards are designed to support research and creative activities that are not likely to be funded by external sources and to promote local, regional, and national recognition of the activities of the college and the university. This research program is open to full-time CAH faculty in instructor, tenure-line/tenured positions, and multiple-year visiting positions at the level of instructor or higher in the first or second year of a multi-year (at least 3 year) position. Team projects are encouraged but not required. The PI must be a CAH faculty member.

Total proposal requests may not exceed $5,000. Requests for travel are limited to no more than $2,500. Some allowable uses of funds are travel expenses, registration, supporting materials, supplies, and publication costs. Some prohibited purchases are non-travel related food, alcohol, personal items, and incentive awards. Funding may not be used for faculty salary, overloads, adjunct replacement costs, or course buyouts.

Notification of winning proposals will be made no later than November 15, 2011
