World War I: The “Great Stalemate” That Changed the World Part 2: The “War to End All Wars”
The Allies – the Triple Entente – were able to stop Germany in France, before Germany could overrun Paris and effectively “end” the war in one quick stroke. But the French and British forces arrayed against Germany, east of Paris, were unable to defeat their foes. Thus, the war actually ground to a smoldering stalemate, with efforts made on both sides to outflank the other, nearly all of which were failures. This terrible situation was unplanned for, and neither side had the strategic resources or intelligence to make the situation “break” in their favor. Thus, the two sides became bogged down in the mindless, churning environment of what we can safely call a “killing machine.” Meanwhile, the Germans’ new naval threat, the “Unterseeboot,” or “U-boat” as the allies called it, was raising havoc with allied shipping in the North Sea and the Atlantic.
