Meeting Notes

The Committee reviewed the meeting notes from the March 10 meeting. Notes were approved. All meeting notes are posted to http://www.sdccdonline.net/handbook/.

New Mobile Projector Unit – Multimedia Kit

Dave provided a demonstration of SDOLP’s new Multimedia Kit which includes a SurfacePro 2 tablet, Pico Projector, and mini collapsible screen. The kit fits into an over- the-shoulder bag and is available for faculty/admin checkout for periods up to two weeks. The SurfacePro 2 has full Windows, Camtasia, and Microsoft Office. The super portable Pico project (slightly bigger than a deck of cards) is 100 lumens and has a battery life of approximately 4 hours. The portable screen ~2’Wx1’H is light weight and sits nicely on a table top. The projector can hook into many sources including computer, tablet, or phone. The multimedia kit can be loaned out from Dave by contacting him at [email protected].

SafeAssign

Kats surveyed the group for members who had the opportunity to compared SafeAssign to TurnItIn. Tobey offered her experience and findings; Tobey used samples from 100 students. She used TurnItIn for two assignments and used SafeAssign for a third assignment. Tobey received only three concerns from students transitioning to SafeAssign. Tobey said that from her perspective SafeAssign lacked a bit of attractiveness and it took a couple of more steps to use, but she felt that SafeAssign would suffice for her courses as an anti-plagiarism software tool. Hank also offered his experience. He was quite pleased and very satisfied with SafeAssign. He found SafeAssign easy to use and he sees no reason to continue funding TurnItIn.

TurnItIn Consortium

Kats reported that she met with Yvelin Yang, TurnItIn Senior Regional Sales Manager, on April 7. Yvelin was apologetic for the inability to negotiate a license and price suitable for a districtwide SDCCD license. Yvelin offered to meet with colleges separately to discuss separate licensing at $1.75-$1.83 per FTES. Kats will provide VPIs with Yvelin’s contact information.

CCC’s Online Education Initiative (OEI) Kats attended Campus Technology 2014 conference held April 8-9 in Long Beach. Video archive of the conference is posted to the web at http://ccconlineed.org/. The OEI presentation was delivered as Town Hall Part 1: Advancing Technology for California's Community College Students, and Town Hall Part 2: The California Community Colleges Online Education Initiative. Kats described that the present focus is on three essential components 1) Common Student Assessment, 2) Education Plans, and 3) OEI. Common Assessment was discussed referencing SB 1456 student success and support services. Currently about thirty-three colleges use ACCUPLACER, a suite of tests that assesses reading, writing, math, and computer skills. The question was raised if ACCUPLACER should be used statewide for all 112 community colleges. The CAI will be investigating the common assessment tool. The EdPlan component is even more detailed and complicated; It was suggested that each school insert a “portlet” into their existing system which would allow students to see their educational progress including courses taken from other colleges. Currently ‘ASSIST’ http://www.assist.org helps students with articulation of JC courses to a 4-year. The EPI and CAI (Common Education Plan and Common Assessment Initiatives, respectively) will also focus on including in ASSIST articulation agreements between community colleges Kats said the current OEI focus is on ADT courses and that there are a lot of issues to work out. Basic Skills courses were not discussed. Kats reported that the Steering Committee will be forming subcommittees to tackle major areas. The OEI Steering Committee will also be developing the criteria for the applications to participate in OEI Pilot. Open Forum

Sandra discussed the CCC’s Educational EcoSystem and its ability to possibly combine existing resources such as @One, CCCConfer, 3CMedia Solutions, CVC, and CCCApply. Sandra mentioned that focus was stressed on services such as tutoring and faculty development, but more attention needs to be steered toward library services.

Kats announced that SDOLP staff and SDCCD Online Faculty Mentors will be attending the Online Teaching Conference slated to be held June 20-21 in San Diego.

SDOLP staff will be offering district faculty a 3-day Summer Institute June 9-11. Beginning multimedia 9:00-noon, and advanced multimedia training 1:00-4:00pm.

Next Meeting: Monday, May 12, 2014, noon-1:30pm, Miramar College W-248
