Clothing for Children Procedure

Aim: “We aim to ensure children are clothed appropriately meeting temperature, cultural and safety needs.”  The physical needs of all children in care will be catered for.  Children will be clothed in appropriate attire to ensure they feel comfortable and relaxed in their play.  Children will be clothed in attire, which will allow for safe play for themselves and others.  Children’s independence and self help skills will be encouraged in relation to clothing.  Individual cultural differences will be respected.  Children will wear clothes to meet sun protection standards. PROCEDURE:  Centre staff should discuss clothing requirements with parents at the first contact with centre/s when welcoming new families.  Children to bring spare clothes every day (both summer and winter). All clothes to be labelled clearly with child’s name. Family to pack spare clothes for children on outings and at play sessions.  Children to be dressed in comfortable and appropriate play clothes. Warm clothes for outside play in colder months and clothes that are appropriate for sun protection. (Refer to the Sun Smart Policy)  Belts and braces to be avoided. These can make toileting difficult for the child.  Children to wear practical clothes for toilet training and nappy changing i.e. easy to slip on/off.  Parents are encouraged not to send children to care in tops or jumpers that have hoods with cords, as the cords may get caught and cause injury.  Children are to have long hair tied back. Hair tied back allows for more comfortable and safe play as it is not in child’s face. Tied back hair also reduces the risk of head lice spreading from child to child.  Children with ears and body piercing are encouraged to wear studs. Children’s fingers may catch in sleepers and cause accidents.  Children are encouraged to wear sneakers, sandals or shoes with non-slip soles. For safety reasons we discourage the wearing of thongs or slip-on shoes.  Children will be encouraged to be independent with their clothing depending on age and development stage e.g. putting shoes and socks on, taking jumper off etc.  Children to keep shoes on during colder months whilst playing outdoors. Children are to keep shoes on at all times when playing outdoors, with the exception of the sandpit.  Children will be dressed according to temperature in room or outside depending on play area.  Individual parent’s wishes will be respected and discussions will occur between carer’s and parent to ensure child’s needs are met.  Individual cultural preferences will be considered and discussions will occur between carer’s and parent to ensure child’s needs are met.
