Development of Literacy (Procedural Writing), Active Learning

Objectives To photograph the steps involved in making a smoothie.

Describe orally the steps involved in making a smoothie.

Write a procedure on how to make a smoothie.

Class: 3rd/ 4th

Overview

This would ideally be spread over 3 lessons.

Step by step guide Preparation Teacher will show YouTube clips on how to make smoothies on the IWB.

Pupils will be divided into groups of 3 or 4 and assigned roles (two will share being the photographer, one will chop fruit, one will operate blender, take turns doing voiceovers).

The children will decide in their groups what fruit they want they want to in their smoothies and arrange to bring in the ingredients between them.

The teacher will have blenders organised for each group.

Revise/ brainstorm procedural language.

Lesson activity The children will organise their work space and ingredients.

They will make the smoothie and use the iPad to take photos of the various steps as they work through them.

They will then use the ‘Explain Everything’ app to go back and outline each of the steps using the photos.

Conclusion

Finally the children will write up their procedures on ‘How to Make a Smoothie’ using the first steps writing frames (which they will already be familiar with).

Differentiation Mixed ability groups so weaker children will learn from their peers.

Use of sentence starters and word mats for less able children. Hints and tips Teacher will have to supervise the children while they use the blender for safety purposes.

Assessment Direct teacher observation

Extension Activities

Each group could share their presentation with the rest of the class using the Prezi app.

The final drafts of the written procedures could be displayed outside the classroom with the photographs to accompany them so that other classes, teachers and parents can see the children’s work.
