DESIGN ALERT FROM PROCATS (PROACTIVE CLAIMS ANALYSIS AND TRACKING SYSTEM)

ISSUE: Utilities for fixed equipment.

BACKGROUND: ProCATS data shows utility connections such as water, steam, electric, and floor drains etc. for equipment are frequently missed on contract drawings. Involved are a number of change orders with substantial dollar amount. The equipment involved are such as water still, glassware washers, lab controlled temperature rooms, washer sterilizes, fume hoods, and garbage can washers etc.

RECOMMENDATIONS/CONCLUSION: 1. It's important to remind the A/Es to pay attention in showing utility connections for these equipment on the contract documents to avoid change orders. 2. It's a multidisciplinary responsibility and each discipline would ensure compliance by their A/E designers in showing their respective utilities for the equipment.
