The Owl’s letter delivery service part 2

A brilliant designer has come up with a letter carrying pouch which would enable the owl to carry all of the letters in one go instead of him having to return to the Ministry of Magic every time.

A route planner has worked out the distances between each house – see the diagram below. It is not possible for the owl to travel between a couple of houses because the trees are too high and there is no light for him to navigate safely.

The solid line arrows show the routes back and forward from the Ministry of Magic.

The arrows with the dotted lines show the shortcuts that the owl could make to save him having to return to the Ministry.

1. Open a new Word document. Save it to your area calling it ‘owl route modelling’

2. On this document, plan out a different route that the owl could take that night by typing up the stages.

Remember that he has to:  start from the Ministry of Magic  visit all 5 houses  return to Ronnie’s house because he forgets the letter  return to Harry’s house to pick up Harry’s reply  end up back at the Ministry of Magic.

3. Take a screen print of your original spreadsheet and paste it into your Word document.

4. Crop the image and give it a label explaining what it is a screen print of.

6. Make the changes to your spreadsheet and have a look at whether you reduced the number of miles that he flies in a night.

7. Take a screen print of your changes and paste them into your Word document.

8. Crop the image and give it a label explaining what it is a screen print of.

9. Write a sentence below to explain how accurate your prediction was.

10.Now have a go at improving the owl’s journey even further. Plan out a different route.

11.Again, make a prediction.

12.Make your changes.

13.Screen print your changes.

14.Paste your screen print into your Word document, cropping and labelling it.

15.Make a comment about how accurate your changes were.
