Advertising the Industrial Age

As we have discovered in class the industrial revolution was not only an age of rapid technological change but it was also when advertising and marketing as we understand got its start. In this assignment you will ask yourself what if modern advertising existed in the industrial age what would it look like.

The Task: You will create a modern style advertisement for an industrial revolution invention. It could be a print ad, poster ad, radio ad (done as a presentation), or TV ad (done as a video or skit).

Directions: 1. Choose an industrial revolution invention. Do this by using your notes from class or the internet. Determine your selling points (this is real historical information): a. What does it do? b. How is it better than what is already out there? Why would I want it? c. Who would use this? Who is your market? (design your ad to appeal to them) d. What does it cost? You will almost certainly have to use a price from a few years after it was invented and in some case may have to talk about a rental price 3. Create a visual of your product (picture for print & poster, picture or video for TV, and description for radio) 4. Develop your ad but keep in mind to be effective it should be: a. Creative – this includes things like the placement of the picture and words as well as font and style used b. Engage the audience – this includes things like what pictures are used and what language is used (keep it school appropriate) c. Be concise – you need to say all the selling points and convince the audience but you do NOT what to have LOTS of words d. Be accurate – is your information historically correct
