APHUG Amazing Race Project Spring 2012

Your goal is to create a trip/competition modeled on the Amazing Race reality show from CBS. You will work in teams of 2. We will spend the week ahead working on this project. Each team will present their project to the class beginning on May 29. All seniors must arrange to present TO ME either before or after school, this week. This project is worth 250 points

The project consists of the following elements:  It will take the form of a power point presentation (no exceptions); Important note for MAC users: make sure you use the INSERT function to put your images into the power point slides. Otherwise when you try to show it on a PC your images will not show up.  Your presentation file, labeled with your name (s), MUST BE ON A FLASH DRIVE. Failure to do so will result in a 20 POINT PENALTY  You will plan an itinerary for the race. In other words you plot out the course around the world. You figure out which countries will be included, how to get from one country and one place to another, when to travel, and how to cover all the required elements  You must plan 7 stages of the 2-3 week race excluding the starting point. You will need to visit North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceana at least once  At least 3 of your destinations must be in LDCs and 3 in MDCs  For each destination you will create a challenge, detour or road block, that race participants must complete. These should be related to some local cultural feature or activity like performing a traditional dance or eating a particular food, or completing a task related to our units of study that is common in that area. You must include something related to each of the following main units we did: cultural geography (language, religion, ethnicity, traditions, customs, food) human/environmental interaction, agriculture, economic development, urbanization & cities, and political geography. Each challenge should differ from the others (check the Amazing Race website for ideas at http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race/)  Extra consideration will be given to any challenge that we could actually complete in class like a game or puzzle  You will also select a “pit stop” for each phase of the race. You must research the historical/geographical significance of the location to justify why it is important for the country or region in which the race stops for the night. Your pit stop doesn’t need to be a hotel.  You must include a map of each city visited  You must include TRAVEL TIMES and stops for FLIGHTS between major destinations  You will need a bibliography of all the resources you used to complete your project The project will be evaluated using the following criteria:  Completed and ready to present on May 24 or 25 for SENIORS; May 29 for juniors  Inclusion of all required elements, following all the instructions  Creativity in planning your “race”  Mastery of the power point medium; on a flash drive  Use of interesting visuals  Quality of your involvement in the presentation: do you take questions well, speak loudly, and are able to explain exactly what you did  Evidence that BOTH partners contributed  Your final grade will be a combination of peer evaluation and teacher assessment  Students will complete evaluation sheets during each presentation Project is due ON Friday MAY 25(Seniors) TUESDAY May 29(juniors)
