ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY Second Reading ACADEMIC SENATE Fall 2008 SESSION

Senate Motion # 2 (2008–09)

Motion Introduced by: Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee Duane Roen, Chair

Date of Introduction April 21, 2008 for First Reading:

Date of Second Reading: September 8, 2008

Title of Motion: Request from the Ira A Fulton School of Engineering – to establish an undergraduate Certificate in Computer Gaming

1 The Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee recommends Academic Senate approval

2 of a proposal submitted by the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering – to establish an

3 undergraduate Certificate in Computer Gaming

Rationale:

This certificate will be available to students in most disciplines and will provide them with an understanding of the technologies behind computer gaming and how those technologies can be applied to domain specific problems in many fields of study and not just to create video games for recreation. The certificate was developed by a multidisciplinary task force with the goal of integrating computer gaming with other academic disciplines such as education and art. The certificate is needed to provide the depth of interdisciplinary content not possible as a minor or concentration in an existing program. 5/10/18

ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY Second Reading ACADEMIC SENATE Fall 2008 SESSION

Senate Motion # 3 (2008–09)

Motion Introduced by: Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee Duane Roen, Chair

Date of Introduction February 18, 2008 for First Reading:

Date of Second Reading: April 21, 2008

Title of Motion: Request from the College of Public Programs/School of Community Resources & Development – to establish an undergraduate Certificate – Creative City Certificate

1 The Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee recommends Academic Senate approval

2 of a proposal submitted by the College of Public Programs/School of Community Resources

3 & Development – to establish an undergraduate Certificate – Creative City Certificate

Rationale:

The Creative City Certificate recognizes the shift currently underway—featuring the New Economy, rise of the “creative class,” and networked regions and institutions—which privileges integrated holistic thinking, an emphasis on place specificity, and the centrality of human creativity to promoting urban and environmental health and well-being. The Creative City Certificate will add value to students’ majors and/or work experience, preparing them to assume leadership roles in enhancing quality of life, specifically by enhancing quality of place.

Cities are centers of human creativity and cultural innovation. They both attract and breed these. Such creativity and innovation are apparent in the vitality of the arts, as well as that of businesses (both large and small), research (basic and applied), and the everyday life unique to any given locale. These are the ingredients that make our places sustainable—economically, socially, and environmentally--by endowing a “sense of place” along with a “sense of community.” 5/10/18

ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY Second Reading ACADEMIC SENATE Fall 2008 SESSION

Senate Motion # 4 (2008–09)

Motion Introduced by: Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee Duane Roen, Chair

Date of Introduction April 21, 2008 for First Reading:

Date of Second Reading: September 8, 2008

Title of Motion: Request from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences – Department of Mathematics and Statistics - for the implementation of a new graduate degree program – Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics

1 The Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee recommends Academic Senate approval

2 of a proposal submitted by the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences – Department of

3 Mathematics and Statistics for the implementation of a new graduate degree program –

4 Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics

Rationale:

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Arizona State University is transforming into the School of Mathematics and Statistics. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) is supporting the simultaneous development of interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, and Mathematics Education, to be housed in the new School of Mathematics and Statistics along with the existing Ph.D. degree in Mathematics. A new Ph.D. degree in Applied Mathematics and its associated graduate faculty will become a focal point for Applied Mathematics at ASU. It will generate a locally, nationally and internationally recognized graduate program connecting the notion of Applied Mathematics with Arizona State University. 5/10/18

ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY Second Reading ACADEMIC SENATE Fall 2008 SESSION

Senate Motion # 5 (2008–09)

Motion Introduced by: Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee Duane Roen, Chair

Date of Introduction April 21, 2008 for First Reading:

Date of Second Reading: September 8, 2008

Title of Motion: Request from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences – Department of Mathematics and Statistics - for the implementation of a new graduate degree program – Ph.D. in Statistics

1 The Curriculum and Academic Programs Committee recommends Academic Senate approval

2 of a proposal submitted by the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences – Department of

3 Mathematics and Statistics for the implementation of a new graduate degree program –

4 Ph.D. in Statistics

Rationale:

Statistics is a basic and standard academic discipline and virtually all major research universities in the US have a Ph.D. program in statistics. To be competitive in attracting statistics faculty and students interested in becoming statisticians it is vital that ASU have a Ph.D. degree in Statistics. Additionally Arizona and the Phoenix area in particular are working hard to encourage biotech and other high tech businesses and industries to come to the state and Valley. Statisticians will play an important role in these high tech endeavors. 5/10/18

ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY Second Reading ACADEMIC SENATE Fall 2008 SESSION

Senate Motion # 6 (2008–09)

4 Ph.D. in Mathematics Education

Rationale:

Arizona State University is developing a plan for a School of Mathematics and Statistics to be launched in 2009.

A new Ph.D. degree in Mathematics Education and its associated graduate faculty will become a focal point for research on learning and teaching secondary school and collegiate mathematics.

The new program will allow faculty from diverse units across the university, such as education, engineering, philosophy, statistics, and linguistics to participate, as program associates, in collaborative research with mathematics education faculty and in the mentoring and preparation of mathematics education Ph.D. students. 5/10/18

3 and Social Change for the implementation of a new degree program –

4 B.S. in Applied Mathematics for the Life and Social Sciences

Rationale:

The proposed Baccalaureate degree in Applied Mathematics for the Life and Social Sciences is intended to provide the students entering the environmental, life, health, mathematical, and social science fields the quantitative, scientific and analytical skills that are becoming critical but are currently lacking as a broad background necessary in the social, life and mathematical sciences.

This proposal supports the establishment of a new undergraduate major in the applied mathematics for the life and social sciences (AMLSS) at ASU. This is a flexible and innovative major that attracts the active participation of quantitative and computational faculty whose research is driven by intellectual fusion. This new major offers a most promising avenue for creating a visible, innovative, successful and prominent effort in AMLSS at ASU. 5/10/18
