Mini Grant Competition - Spring 2007- Spring 2008

Mini Grant Competition - Spring 2007- Spring 2008 Institute of Science and Society 131 Carver Hall

Purpose of the ISS Mini Grants The purpose of the grants is to provide “seed money” for developing interdisciplinary research proposals or interdisciplinary workshops that ultimately lead to proposals to evaluate the environmental, economic, social, and policy implications of bioeconomy expansion. For example, proposals may consider the social benefits as well as the social costs of bioeconomy expansion, including water quality and quantity, air quality, climate change, and community development implications. Such topics are interdisciplinary and cannot be done by social scientists alone but require interdisciplinary interaction with the sciences to secure grant funding and to be successful in scholarly endeavors.

This call for proposals represents the commitment of the Institute of Science and Society (ISS) to foster interdisciplinary teams of faculty to develop proposals and workshops leading to proposals that would fund research and scholarship on social science aspects of bioeconomy expansion with interdisciplinary ties to the sciences.

Priority will be given to projects with the greatest promise of leading to interdisciplinary proposals for external funding and producing scholarly research, education, and publications recognizing the important links between science and society.

Emphasis on Interdisciplinary Collaborative Research Only collaborative research and workshop proposals addressing social science dimensions of the expanding bioeconomy will be considered for funding. The proposal must have a full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty member as PI or co-PI. PI or co-PI can be from other colleges, but at least one PI or co-PI must be from a department administered solely or jointly by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Additional weight will be given to applications with new matching funds from departments.

Use of Funds Applications will be considered for up to $10,000 but we anticipate funding more commonly in the $5,000 area. Funds may be used for hourly labor, graduate and undergraduate research assistants, supplies, services, and domestic travel essential to secure funding and carry-out research. Not supported by this program are faculty and technical salaries, travel to attend professional meetings, or equipment and software. Applications are due on by May 10, September 15, and January 20. Recipients will be notified of funding approximately two weeks after the deadline. Content of Application 1) Proposal must be submitted with the cover sheet attached. 2) An abstract in educated lay language not to exceed 250 words is required. 3) A brief description of the research proposal or workshop being proposed (2-3 single spaced pages), including the relevance of the topic to the mission of Science and Society, the expectations for the workshop or the research proposal, key literature and ideas relevant to this proposal, the approach to examining the hypothesis or idea, what information will be needed, how will it be analyzed and interpreted, and why is an interdisciplinary approach critical in the context of this proposal. 4) A plan for seeking external or subsequent funding must be outlined with planned timeframe (1/2-1 single spaced page). 5) Budgetary details must be attached and each item should be briefly justified in terms of the proposed work (not to exceed 1 page). 7) An abbreviated C.V. for all researchers (not to exceed 1 page each) stressing recent and most relevant work related to this project.

Research Compliance If your proproposal involves human subjects, animal subjects, radioisotope or radiation producing devices, recombinant DNA, human or animal pathogens, or biological toxins use, your project must be reviewed and approved by the appropriate research compliance committee. For more information please contact the Office of Research Compliance or go to their web site. http://grants-svr.admin.iastate.edu/vpr/research_compliance/. Approvals must be received before funds will be released.

Submission Procedures and Timetable Completed electronic applications due at the Institute of Science and Society, 131 Carver Hall on May 10, 2006, September 15, 2006, and January 20, 2007 (no gold sheet required). Notification of awards will occur approximately two weeks after deadline. Funds will be made available to grantees immediately upon their acceptance of the award.
