Gordon 16 17 18 HISTORY OF LEGISLATIVE ACTIONS 19 20 Date Body Action Description with journal page number 21 2/23/2011 House Introduced and adopted ( House Journalpage 9) 22 23 24 VERSIONS OF THIS BILL 25 26 2/23/2011 27 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A HOUSE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR REVEREND LAWRENCE E. 12 GORDON AND THE MEMBERS OF GREATER MACEDONIA 13 AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF 14 CHARLESTON COUNTY, AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM, 15 UPON THE OCCASION OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH 16 ANNIVERSARY OF THE CHURCH AND ITS MINISTRY IN 17 THE COMMUNITY. 18 19 Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives of the 20 State of South Carolina are pleased to learn that Greater 21 Macedonia Methodist Episcopal Church will celebrate the 22 milestone of its centennial anniversary during a week of special 23 services and a church banquet to be held from February 21 through 24 February 27, 2011; and 25 26 Whereas, in 1910, Reverend Simon Bonneau had a vision for a 27 church that would minister to the needs of people living in what 28 was known as the Borough in downtown Charleston, and with the 29 assistance of other faithful members, Greater Macedonia African 30 Methodist Episcopal Church was born; and 31 32 Whereas, the church, located on the corner of Vernon and 33 Inspection Streets, was built in 1911 and was later moved to its 34 current location on Alexander Street; and 35 36 Whereas, sponsored by the church’s Simon Bonneau Club, the 37 anniversary celebration will include four evenings of revival 38 services around the theme, “Keeping Macedonia 100 Years and 39 Still Standing on the Rock,” with different guest preachers each 40 evening from February 21 to February 24; and 41
[3729] 2 1 Whereas, the 100th Anniversary Church Banquet will be held at the 2 Alfred Williams Center on Durant Avenue in North Charleston; 3 and 4 5 Whereas, culminating the weeklong anniversary activities, former 6 pastor, the Honorable Reverend William A. Alston, will preach the 7 Sunday morning worship service on February 27, 2011; and 8 9 Whereas, all the members will be wearing black and gold tshirts on 10 this special occasion to symbolize their love for God and for their 11 church and to show a spirit of unity that will keep them together in 12 the years to come; and 13 14 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of 15 Representatives are grateful for the century of ministry that the 16 members of Greater Macedonia African Methodist Episcopal 17 Church have given to the community and wish them continued 18 usefulness and blessing in the century to come. Now, therefore, 19 20 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 21 22 That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of 23 South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Reverend 24 Lawrence E. Gordon and the members of Greater Macedonia 25 African Methodist Episcopal Church of Charleston County, and 26 congratulate them, upon the occasion of the one hundredth 27 anniversary of the church and its ministry in the community. 28 29 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 30 Reverend Lawrence E. Gordon, pastor of Greater Macedonia 31 African Methodist Episcopal Church. 32 XX 33
