From the MS Counselors, re considerations about applying to CTY:
MS parents possibly interested in having their son or daughter attend CTY Summer Programs through Johns Hopkins Univ, PLEASE BE AWARE that there are many excellent summer programs OTHER than CTY --including programs for the academically talented at such top universities as Stanford, Univ of California Berkeley, NorthWestern, and the Univ of Chicago-- that do NOT require taking the SAT, which is a long and difficult test made for High School 11th &12th graders! CTY is the only program that requires the SAT; and parents of SAS students who have attended all the academically challenging programs listed above other than CTY have been very satisfied. We Counselors do NOT recommend Middle School students taking the SAT.
However, if you and your son or daughter definitely want to apply to, and attend if accepted, CTY next summer, you need to start the application process NOW.
CTY requires a 95% or higher score on last year's IOWA test in major Math, Verbal/Reasoning, or Composite areas, just to apply to the program. If your son or daughter has this score, you can apply online at http://cty.jhu.edu via the International Talent Search section.
Once you've completed the online application (it has a $50. USDollar fee), you will then need an email confirmation/ invitation letter from CTY, to get registration materials from one of the SAS MS Counselors for the SAT test given in January (for Gr.7 & 8 students only; Gr.6 students need to take the SCAT test).
You may NOT register for the SAT online, if you want to take the SAT at SAS.
The SAT is given at SAS Puxi HS on Jan 22 ‘11, and the REGISTRATION DEADLINE is Wed Nov 17 ‘10. All completed forms must be into Mr Wolf or Mrs Peake by 3:00pm on that day. The SCAT test, for Gr.6 students, is given elsewhere in Shanghai.
Please contact the MS Counselors, Mrs Peake (Red) or Mr Wolf (Gold), asap if you have any questions.
