Arrowhead Elementary PTA 6.10.5 Board of Directors Meeting Tuesday, January 8, 2013

Call to Order The meeting was called to order by Angela Cummings, Co-President, at 6:33 pm at the library. Notice was given and a quorum was present.  Everyone present introduced themselves.

Board Meeting Business  Angela presented the November 2012 Board of Director Meeting Minutes. Angela asked if there were any proposed changes or edits. There were not, and the minutes were approved as written.  Rose Aliverti, Secretary, passed around correspondence.  Jackie Suarez, Co-President, talked about nominating committee. o Beth Shore, Holly Reed and Coleen Frederick will be nominated for this committee at the February General Meeting with Rose Aliverti as the alternate.  Angela gave the Treasurer Report for Coleen Frederick, Treasurer. o Highlighted income School Assemblies, Fall Fundraiser, Staff funds. o Expenses included Fall Fundraiser Pizza Party and Pacific Science Center day. o Added $200 to Green/Garden budget for compost bins that have not been spent yet. o Washington State Sales Tax Return is due January 31st, 2013.  Jackie led a discussion about the Overage in the budget. These funds are to benefit all students. The amount is $7885. Possible ideas included playground benches, quiet options for recess, display cases and a ground mounted reader board. Discussion was had over the pros and cons of a ground mounted reader board on campus. Jessie Harrison, Principal, gave a couple other ideas given by the Leadership Team. Ideas included solid top picnic tables, new tarps for playground equipment, and books for Just Right reading levels.  Jackie talked about the PTA awards Golden Acorn, Honorary Life Membership and Outstanding Advocate. Award submissions are due in March and presented at the June General Membership meeting.

Words From The School  Jesse Harrison gave an update from the school. She explained what the Instructional Team and Leadership Team is and talked about the Common Core State Standards to be adopted in 2014-2015.  Anne Janssen, School Nurse, talked about ways to stay healthy. She encouraged having emergency contacts that can pick up your children, keeping children who are ill at home, immunizations, and healthy hand washing, sleep and breakfast habits.  Candy Caylor, School Secretary, talked about her role in the office. She talked about the sign in procedure, volunteer forms, attendance, communication and PTA clubs.

Committee Reports & Announcements  Angela and Cindy Jensen talked about the Northshore Council Reflections Ceremony and the Men’s Essay Contest for Washington State PTA.  Angela talked about Science Fair, happening February 1 at 6:30 in the gym. They are working on an Egg Drop contest. Registration forms are available on the website.

 Angela mentioned Skate Night is Friday January 18th, 2013 at Lynnwood Bowl & Skate.  Angela talked about the School Dance on behalf of Molly Svasand, chair. Molly and Fernell Miller, PE Teacher, are coordinating a practice for a surprise parent flash mob dance this year.  Bill Scott, Tim Keeler and Michael Reagan gave an update for Pancake Breakfast. They are looking for volunteers.  Cary Westerbeck, Legislative Co-Chair, discussed Washington State Legislative Focus day on January 24th, 2013.  Tom Taylor, E-Prep Chair, gave an update on E-Prep and talked about items PTA purchased for emergency situations for the school.  Candace Coalman and Amy Smith, on behalf of Jarrod Arbini and Ed Smith, chairs, talked about Dads N Donuts, happening Wednesday February 13 in the gym at 8:30am.  Erin Person, MCT Chair, gave an update for Missoula Children’s Theatre performance of Jack & The Beanstalk. Auditions are happening Monday, February 4th at 3:35 in the gym. Cost is $25 per child, additional siblings are $15.  Amy Smith, Co-Vice President, gave an update on open positions: o Still looking for Spring Staff Appreciation (need leads for Tues, Wed, Thurs & Fri). o Art Auction Chair – going to be off the table this year. o Hawk Walk Co-Chair position has been filled by Erin Person. o Still looking for Talent Show Chair and or co-chair.  Angela gave an update on after school clubs: o Knitting Club starts this week. o Chef’s Club has also started and Karen Smith, Chair, gave an update on enrollment and how the class works. o Amy Smith gave an update on Board Game Club on behalf of Ken Rufo, chair. Information available is on the website. Cost is $10 for grades 1 - 3 and they are looking for volunteers to help facilitate the games.  Cindy Jensen, Membership Chair, gave an update on Membership. We have 2 more members added since December’s meeting. The focus continues to be on getting more Arrowhead families as members.  Rose Aliverti, Secretary, talked about moving the deadline for Weekly Email Highlights from Saturday morning to Wednesday night.  Angela stated that Superintendent Larry Francois will be speaking at the March 5th, 2013 General Meeting and moving that meeting to the Arrowhead Gym.
