Note: Following is the framework for the State of Maine License Inspection Technician, as defined more comprehensively in the State of Maine Inspection Manual (see link above). Upon completion of study and as an extension of the classroom experience, Maine secondary CTE instructors may accompany their students to the State of Maine Department of Public Safety to take the exam for License Inspection Technician. Students ages 17 ½ years who successfully complete the exam may request that the exam results be placed on file at the Maine State Police Department of Public Safety; when the student turns 18 years of age and passes a background check, s/he will be issued the State of Maine License Inspection Technician credential.

General Responsibilities of Inspection Station Licensee a. Describe the responsibilities of the owner (licensee) in regard to: o Maine statutes and rules concerning motor vehicle inspections o Maintenance of all equipment and supplies issued by the Maine State Police o Daily operations of the licensed station o Availability for inspection by an employee of the Maine State Police all materials concerning inspections that are required or issued o Rules concerning the display of an official inspection station sign, the inspection procedure chart, the inspection station license, and all Technicians’ licenses as furnished by the Maine State Police o Postings showing the station’s hourly rate and business hours for the inspection o Statutes and rules pertaining to Fleet Inspection Stations o Securities and handling procedures of inspection stickers o Employment of Inspection Technicians o Business operations rules and regulations and premises tools 3. Vehicle Inspection Classifications o Explain fee structures and regulations pertaining to the following inspections: Class A, Class B, Class C, Class D, Class E o Describe the sequence of inspection for motor vehicles. o List the items to be inspected for a Class A inspection. cte0015.doc o List the items to be inspected for a Class B inspection. o List the items to be inspected for a Class C inspection. o List the items to be inspected for a Class D inspection. o List the items to be inspected for a Class E inspection. 4. Responsibilities of Inspection Technician Licensees a. Describe the responsibilities of Inspection Technicians with regard to: o Accessing a written or electronic copy of the Motor Vehicle Inspection rules o Notifying the State Police Inspection Unit of any change of place of employment o Reporting to the State Police Inspection Unit any convictions for violating 29A MRSA § 1768, any suspension of the Inspection Technician’s license to operate a motor vehicle, and any criminal convictions o Informing the State Police Inspection Unit of the reason and the dates of the Technician’s suspension or revocation of his/her driver’s license o Refusing to issue an inspection sticker to a vehicle that is not mechanically safe or that poses a hazard to the occupants of the vehicle or to the general public 5. Sticker Replacement Stations, window tint stations and agents o Describe the requirements and responsibilities of Sticker Replacement Stations. o List the responsibilities of Replacement Sticker Agents. o Define the responsibilities of Window Tint Stations and their Agents. 6.
