4th Grade – 1st 9 Weeks - Independent Study Project Backyard Getaway

Assignment(s) Due Date Teacher Initials & Grade Earned Relaxation Area Reflection and Diorama: Reflect on and make an 9/17/13 unlimited list of activities and items that are relaxing to you. Create a diorama of how your relaxation area will look. Road Map, including Climate and Terrain Features: Create a 9/24/13 road map of your backyard using pencil and paper. Draw and label the area locations in your yard. Create a key with symbols if needed. Be sure to include your creative map title and key. In addition, consider the climate and terrains you will choose for your backyard. On the bottom of the map, write the climate and color code the terrains.

Recreation Area Brainstorm and Safety Rules Signs: Brainstorm recreational activities that you enjoy or would like to enjoy. Record 9/24/13 creative ways that you could incorporate two to five of them in your backyard recreation area. For each of your backyard recreational activities, design safety rules signs. Each titled sign should list important rules for being safe and playing fair. After designing them on paper, please turn them into 3-dimensional signs, using toothpicks. Water Habitat Artwork: Research various types of water habitats 10/1/13 and the ecosystems found within each. Choose the water habitat you would like to have in your backyard. Create an artwork piece of your water habitat. Be sure to include all plan and animal life in and around your habitat. Use the medium(s) of your choice.

Flower or Food Garden T-Chart and Flipbook: Choose whether you’d like to have a flower garden or food garden in your backyard. 10/1/13 Explain your decision in a written paragraph. (6-8 sentences) Create a flipbook of information for each of the TEN plants/food in your garden. Each page should include: the name of the plant/food, maintenance, soil conditions, spacing, amount of sun needed. Be sure to include a Table of Contents! State Tribute Artwork (may not be Texas): Research the symbols 10/8/13 for the state of your choice (ex: state flower, state song, state bird….) Create an artwork that shows what you’ve learned. Please, keep your artwork SMALLER than an 8 ½ by 11 sheet of paper. Backyard Getaway Display! (base materials will be provided) 10/15/13
