ROLE OVERVIEW

This position is responsible for the delivery of approved VET sector programs; teaching, student assessment, maintenance of student files, liaison with other training staff and monitoring of student learning outcomes in accordance with curriculum guidelines of Batchelor Institute, the Faculty of Health, Business and Science and Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) standards; development of culturally appropriate teaching and learning activities. Liaison with remote Indigenous communities and with industry partners is required; travel and working throughout the Northern Territory is an essential requirement of the position.

KEY ROLE PROFILE OUTCOMES

1. Develop, deliver and oversee general construction and carpentry training courses at both remote Indigenous Australian communities and campus based as required, including lectures, tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, work experience and student field excursions, in styles appropriate to the client group.

2. Develop and maintain close working relationships with all general construction and carpentry industry stakeholders.

3. Develop appropriate teaching materials which respond to clients learning needs. In particular, provide specialist technical knowledge and input into the development of language, literacy and numeracy programs.

4. Organise and conduct workplace assessment as required.

5. Maintain student records as required; report progression of students and produce comprehensive reports at the end of each training event.

6. Undertake the basic administrative tasks required of all Batchelor Institute staff in relation to course delivery.

7. Consult and advise students on and document assessments of student competency according to the Institute’s Assessment Rules, Faculty of Health, Business and Science and ASQA quality standards.

8. Undertake and maintain personal professional development

9. Attend Institute, Faculty, department and team meetings as required.

10. Other duties within the range of skills normally associated with this designation as directed.

SELECTION COMPETENCIES

Key selection competencies:

1. A tertiary qualification equivalent to four (4) year’s relevant to teaching, and/or a qualification in general construction and carpentry and/or four (4) year’s experience relevant to this position and if appropriate, eligible for registration in a professional organisation within the field of general construction and carpentry.

2. Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAA or TAE) for delivery in the VET sector or a willingness to obtain same within 6 months.

3. Demonstrated capacity to undertake course/unit coordination and teaching with limited resources at a community level and to initiate and develop culturally appropriate curriculum teaching resources in general construction and carpentry, and evaluate their effectiveness.

4. Demonstrated capacity to work effectively within the social, political and cultural environments of indigenous Australian communities and organisations and communicate sensitively and effectively with indigenous Australians, including adult students and community members, and work effectively within culturally diverse teams.

5. Demonstrated capacity to respond effectively to the learning needs of adult indigenous Australian students enrolled in general construction and carpentry courses, with good organisational and time management skills to undertake a range of administrative, supervisory and liaison tasks including computer technology and electronic communications.

6. Must be able to undertake travel throughout the Northern Territory in a light aircraft, must possess a Northern Territory ‘C’ class drivers licence with experience of driving on unformed roads, and must be prepared to stay in a range of accommodation available to the Batchelor Institute staff, including camping out.

7. Demonstrated capacity to undertake research and other professional development activities and a demonstrated understanding of equal opportunity, affirmative action and quality assurance (ASQA) principles and practices.

Special features of position:

 This position is part of a project to initiate and trial a training and workforce development model for asset maintenance (commercial cleaning operations) Officers in remote NT Indigenous Communities. The project is designed to support training, employment and career pathways for Aboriginal people in communities at the same time as it works toward a solution to the challenge of building an effective and sustainable public housing workforce for remote Indigenous housing in the NT.
