It is our intention to transmit a webcast of the technical meeting. Further details of this will be circulated to WES members prior to the event. Dr Graham Knapp & Fergus McCormick Senior Wind Engineer Structural Engineer Buro Happold Wind Engineering for Stadia This talk will take a broad view of the value which wind engineering brings to modern stadium design, concentrating on four different technical procedures at four project case studies: Urban environmental studies (wind comfort) at Aviva Stadium; Track and field studies at 2012 London Olympic Stadium; structural loading studies for Kirkby stadium, Everton FC and bespoke comfort analysis at Neustadt Grandstand, Germany. These projects combined climate analysis with wind tunnel and computational models and the speakers will explain the choice of technique as well as giving some pointers for the future of wind engineering design for stadia and arenas.
Graham Knapp is senior wind engineer at Buro Happold, where his work covers urban wind and air-flow studies including structural, environmental and sustainability assessments for a wide range of projects. This often involves stadia and long-span roofs, tall buildings and large masterplans, where wind effects are critical to the structural loading on the building or to the success and sustainability of the project. Graham’s PhD compared CFD, wind tunnel and full-scale results for large and complex structures, themes which he has developed throughout his design practice with Buro Happold.
Fergus McCormick works for Buro Happold and has 24 years’ experience of the design and realisation of outstanding engineering structures, Fergus has worked for Buro Happold, Ove Arup and Partners, RFR and Expedition. He has experience in the design of both traditional and state-of-the-art bridges and buildings in both the UK and overseas, but most recently has concentrated on new projects. His past projects include the BA London Eye, The City of Manchester Stadium and long-span footbridges with tuned mass-damper design. Fergus is a technical specialist in cable structures, long-span structures and dynamic and moving structures. For Buro Happold, Fergus is currently Structural Leader for Astana Stadium Retractable Roof; Aviva Stadium, Lansdowne Road Stadium and The London 2012 Olympic Stadium.
Dr Graeme Flynn Manager Wind Environment & Stadia Group BMT Fluid Mechanics Ltd. Use of the Wind Tunnel as a Design Tool
The presentation will discuss advances in modelling, instrumentation and analysis techniques for wind tunnel testing of large sports stadia, and how online analysis can promote wind tunnels as an early stage design tool to develop more efficient stadia in terms of natural microclimate and light-weight roof structures.
Graeme Flynn has over 18 years experience in aerodynamics and wind tunnel testing, spanning the aerospace and civil structures industries. He joined BMT Fluid Mechanics Limited in 2001 and is now head of the company's Wind Environment and Stadia Group. In this role Graeme has worked with many of the world's leading stadium designers on projects such as Emirates Stadium, Aviva Stadium, Donbass Arena, Wembley Stadium, Brighton & Hove Albion FC's Community Stadium, Pune International Cricket Centre and the London 2012 Olympic venues.
