GUILFORD SUPERINTENDENT MAURICE GREEN SUPPORTS THE ARTS In 2009, Superintendent of Guilford County Schools Maurice “Mo” Green announced his vision for Guilford County Schools. As a part of his Strategic Plan 2012, Mr. Green called for the beginning of a summer arts enrichment program for students. From this vision, a designated project team led by Arts Education Curriculum Specialist, Nathan Street, was established. The GCS Summer Arts Institute is scheduled to open for GCS students during the week of July 12, 2010 at Penn-Griffin School for the Arts in High Point. As a part of the Summer Arts Institute, students will be selected from every elementary and middle school to be immersed in instruction in vocal and instrumental music, dance, theater, and visual art. The institute will be administered by Dr. Susan Hines, assistant principal at the Academy at Lincoln, a GCS middle school for the arts. We are happy to also announce that we will be partnering with Moore Music of Greensboro who will provide instruments for the summer session. In addition, we are also happy to announce our partnership with Community Theater of Greensboro who together with GCS will be offering a truly unique experience for students by producing a district-wide musical which will premier July 16-18 and 23-25 at Grimsley High School in Greensboro. The production Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory will feature a cast of 100 that will be comprised of GCS students from every grade level, faculty, and staff. “We are so grateful that in the face of drastic budget cuts and shortfalls, the administration of Guilford County Schools recognizes the importance of strengthening arts education,” said Nathan Street. For further information, contact Nathan Street at [email protected].
