Academic 8 th Grade State mandated Curriculum:  8th grade TEKS and STAAR Objectives Grading Policy:  60% Formative – Daily/Quizzes  40% Summative – Tests/Projects Curriculum:  Skills and application based learning  Students will be expected to work independently and in small groups  Notes and guided practice lead students through new material  Many opportunities for direct instruction of problem-solving skills  Quizzes and tests assess skills, application, and problem-solving  Students need to develop a system of organization that allows them to take and keep up with notes, handouts, graded papers, and current homework Concepts:  Mathematical Processes  Number and Operations o Real Numbers o Irrational Numbers o Scientific Notation  Proportionality o Similar Figures o Graph Proportional Relationships o Dilations o Linear Situations o Rate of Change / Slope o Proportional vs. Non-Proportional o Functions  Expressions, Equations, and Relationships o Volume of Cylinders, Cones, Spheres o Surface Area of Rectangular Prisms, Triangular Prisms, Cylinders o Pythagorean Theorem o One variable equations/inequalities with variables on both sides  Two-dimensional shapes o Rotations, reflections, translations, dilations  Measurement and Data o Scatterplot o Mean Absolute Deviation o Random Samples  Personal Financial Literacy o Interest Rates o Payment Methods o Loans o Financial Responsibility o Investments o Simple Interest / Compound Interest Algebra I

The Algebra I course is a High School level course and students will earn 1 high school Math credit. The Algebra 1 grade will factor into their GPA and they will only receive credit when they pass the End of Course Exam (EOC) for Algebra 1 in May.

State mandated Curriculum:  9th grade level TEKS and STAAR objectives Participant requirements:  7th Grade Pre-AP Math OR:  Credit by Exam - Two parts must be taken and make a score of 90 or better on each part (must be taken in the summer prior to school starting). Grading Policy:  40% Formative – Daily/Quizzes  60% Summative – Tests/Projects Students must be:  Extremely self-motivated in acquiring and demonstrating new algebraic skills  Able to work independently  Willing to seek out answers for questions they might encounter  Capable of independent practice for review material Curriculum:  Fast paced, building skills that form a foundation for all Math courses at the high school level  Largely application and analysis based content learning with a focus on integrating basic skills with new material Classroom Instruction Provides:  Conceptual introduction to new skills incorporating examples and notes for reference  Opportunities for students to gain and use higher level thinking skills Major Exams:  1st & 2nd Semester Exams – 15% of Semester Average – Cannot be retaken  End of Course (Algebra 1 STAAR) – Must be passed in order to earn credit
