Weak Wi-Fi is a national epidemic! Study reveals: Though tablet PCs and smartphones are becoming increasingly popular, home Wi-Fi is not yet fit for them.
Aachen, Germany, July 3, 2013 – How is Germany's Wi-Fi? Hard to believe, but even in the 21st Century it is apparently not good enough. Many German Internet users are frustrated by their wireless home network. As a representative survey done by Germany-based market research company GfK shows, 36.6% of Germans are dissatisfied with their home Wi-Fi network. Either they have poor reception for their smartphone, tablet or laptop or none at all. As most mobile phone pricing structures impose a volume limit on mobile data for mobile phones and tablets, users often want to avoid extra charges by using high-speed Wi-Fi on their devices when at home. For one-third of Germans, this is difficult or impossible.
The topics of this press release: - Current GfK study: Germany suffering from weak Wi-Fi - Women are more forgiving of poor Wi-Fi reception - User dissatisfaction reveals the weaknesses of conventional Wi-Fi networks - Powerline as alternative: Decentralised Wi-Fi transmitters from the power outlet - With the dLAN 500 WiFi, devolo finally gives you Wi-Fi in any room
Current GfK study: Germany suffering from weak Wi-Fi Weak Wi-Fi has a firm hold on Germany. Some 36.6% of those surveyed in a representative study by Germany-based market research company GfK are entirely dissatisfied with the connection quality of their Wi-Fi – or have no reception at all. If we do not consider those who purposely do not use Wi-Fi at home, the assessment is even worse: 41.1% of Germans who want to use Wi-Fi can do so only with great limitations or not at all. Women are more forgiving of poor Wi-Fi reception As part of the GfK study, a total of 1,115 people 14 years and older were asked about their Wi-Fi network coverage. The greatest dissatisfaction was expressed by young people between the ages of 14 and 29. Among this group, 47.0% of Wi-Fi users complained about poor connection quality. In the over-60 age group, still every third Wi-Fi user (33.9%) complained of inadequate Wi-Fi coverage. Women, regardless of age, are a little more lenient towards wireless home networks. On average, 38.6% of females surveyed complained about a poor Wi-Fi connection or none at all, while 44.6% of men did.
User dissatisfaction reveals the weaknesses of conventional Wi-Fi networks The results of the study make it clear that the performance of conventional Wi-Fi networks can no longer keep pace with the needs of users. The solution of using a router as the central Wi-Fi source as well often works only in very small apartments. Though the router delivers a very strong signal in the immediate area, like the basement or hallway, it usually helps very little in the living room or home office. The walls and ceilings weaken the signal too much for a stable Internet connection. A combined router/repeater setup usually does not provide the desired success here either, as the repeaters simply reproduce the already weak Wi-Fi signal without being able to amplify it in a targeted manner.
Powerline as alternative: Decentralized Wi-Fi transmitters from the power outlet An alternative approach for improving Wi-Fi coverage is using what are known as Powerline adapters with an integrated Wi-Fi transmitter. Powerline is a proven technology that uses a home's existing electrical wiring for data transmission. This does not require any prior technical knowledge, since the principle could not be more simple. One Wi-Fi transmitter is plugged in where you need wireless Internet, while a second is connected to the router in the basement or hallway. The solution via Powerline technology has critical advantages: Because the power line serves as a stable, lossless long-distance connection, the Wi-Fi signal is always available at full strength. In addition, it is fast and easy to expand a Wi-Fi Powerline home network by adding more adapters. This way, a uniform, stable signal is available everywhere.
