NEWTOWN MIDDLE SCHOOL 8TH GRADE - U.S. HISTORY (1754 - 1865) PARENT TEACHER NIGHT - ACADEMIC MR. JOE FABRIZIO - INSTRUCTOR

COURSE OBJECTIVES: - To enable a student to read, understand and evaluate materials of a social, political and economic nature. - To enable a student opportunities to respect/be proud of: themselves, their family/culture and their country. - To develop in the student the ability to demonstrate a positive decision making role in his/her community. - To improve reading, writing and map reading skills. - To be responsible for completing assigned work on time.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: We will be studying U.S. History from 1750-1865. Topics will include: The 13 English Colonies, From Revolution to Republic, Forming a Government, The New Republic, A New National Identity, An Expanded Nation, Sectionalism, and Civil War.

PROJECTS: students will also be required to complete several projects (both individual and group).

TEXTBOOKS: U.S. History Beginnings to 1877. On-line access.

- TESTS: - Tests are announced several days in advance. - Test reviews are conducted the day prior to each test (except district quarterly exams). NOTEBOOKS : - Collected the day after chapter test. - Accumulation of all class and homework assignments. - Assignments posted in classroom. - Max score without extra work 90 points. - Work required for an “A” includes: typing assignments, art work, current events - 120 points may be earned per notebook. - For additional information on notebooks/extra credit please read instructor handout.

MISSING/LATE ASSIGNMENTS: - Uncompleted/missing assignments due within one week of the original due date. - Late assignments will lose one grade per day for each non- excused day tardy. (Work missed due to excused absences is worth full credit upon turn-in). - Failure to make up an assignment will result in a grade of zero.

Homework: - Posted in classroom and on-line.
