2009 Picnic Update

Date: Saturday, June 20, 2009 Place: Christopher Morley Park Weather: Rain

For 32 consecutive years, nothing has ever kept the Mitterando family and friends from celebrating and honoring our fathers, past and present. We beat the heat, ignored the dark clouds, outlasted the rain, braved the traffic and conquered the weather. This year, on the eve of our outing, the manager of the park (also a family friend) arranged to shelter us from the predicted, horrific downpours. The winter ice skating rink and pavilion was closed for the summer, but equipped with all the comforts for a picnic. It had lots of space to assemble and keep us dry, chairs and tables, electricity and lighting, plus his and her bathrooms. The shelter saved the day for us. In spite of the downpours, the customary sports and outdoor games continued to be performed. As usual, the first on the scene was the early birds: The Hydos, Laroccas, Bergs, Ingenitos and Cervones, posting signs and preparing breakfast. In spite of a heavy sprinkle, all enjoyed the hot coffee, bacon and eggs, rolls, juice, tea, cake and Dunkin Donuts. Breakfast was barely over when we had the first downpour. Most opted for the dry indoors, after picnic gear was quickly transported to better quarters, a blessing that only God could provide. At noon, lunch was served by the faithful staff. It consisted of fried chicken, sliced pork in brown gravy, hot dogs and sauerkraut, hamburgers, corn on the cob, chicken fingers and a variety of vegetables and assorted salads. Indoor games and entertainment was continuous throughout the day. The adults and teens played softball and volleyball in between the rain drops. The youngsters had their faces painted, learned balloon artistry and parade marching, etc. Another cloud burst forced everyone to seek cover under one roof and eat an early dinner. The choice was Italian and American heroes and pot luck sides, plus the remainder of lunch foods, coffee and tea. By now, the rain had ceased and the activities began again.  Two piñatas hung overhead, loaded with candies and other goodies. Softballs and volleyballs were flying through the air.  This year’s entertainment consisted of a patriotic parade, featuring Olivia, Isabella and Victoria Mitterando, Nicole and Veronica Cervone, Grace Cervone, Julia and Isabella Mitterando, Renee and Christina Hydo and special appearance by Zachary Hydo.  Carolann Elias’ all male revue was also a big hit. Louie, Billy and Richie Mitterando and Larry Blauvelt volunteered to have their tummies painted by Dale Ingenito, as they entertained the crowd.  Much of the day was spent reminiscing and renewing relationships with long lost cousins and friends.  The father of the year trophy was awarded to John Vingara, who accepted it with a speech of gratitude.  The Mitt News was distributed and enjoyed by all. With no sign of weather clearing, the family disbanded at twilight, disappointed by the weather, yet proud of our spirit. Special thanks to the Picnic Committee. Judy, Laura, Carolann, Cheryl, our editor Denise, and our muscle men Al LaRocca, Charlie and Nicholas Hydo, Kevin, Ronnie and Anthony

From The Picnic Committee:

Today marks our 33rd year of celebrating the annual Mitterando family picnic. It started as a simple get together by some family members and has blossomed into a wonderful event for over 100 people. We hope that as you are reading this at the 2010 Annual Mitterando Family Fathers Day Reunion, we are experiencing perfect weather and enjoying the company and activities. We also sure hope that our return after eight years to Bethpage State Park is a huge success. Special thanks to Sunny Sheppard, Richie Mitterando, Olivia and Victoria Pelliccia, “Editor” Denise Mitterando and “web divas” Irene Berg and Dale Ingenito for all the “pre” reunion help. Where would be without the early birds that reserve tables, set up, decorate, cook breakfast etc? Thanks to each and everyone that is involved. Please remember that each and every person in attendance needs to sign the registration book. Also remember to feed the kitty. Please be as generous as possible! Enjoy the day and set a goal to get more family members to attend next year’s reunion God bless all the Mitterandos, past and present. Today is the day that God has set aside for our family.

THE FACTS - NOTHING BUT THE FACTS

Louie (Sonny) Mitterando has been a regular at the gym. He's looking to start up the "senior" Mr Universe. ask him to strike one of his many poses.

Jaclyn Shafer continues her work as a Research Meteorologist for NASA in Huntsville, AL. Her thesis work has been accepted and published by the American Meteorological Society.

It was a cold and snowy night in early December when Laura Vingara and Denise Mitterando trekked over to Dale Ingenito’s new place for a little unpacking. Dale was all worried about the amount of snow that was coming down, but little did she know after leaving her place instead of heading home we went in the opposite direction in the search of some ice cream! Would you believe they were closed?

Ronald and Jennifer Cervone hosted the Hydo family plus Anthony Pellicia for dinner an evening on President’s day weekend. Grace wouldn't stop asking for Zack at bedtime for over a week. Funny though cause when she woke up and he was in her bunk bed she was freaked out. Hope to have you guys stay again Aunt Cheryl!

The Mitterandos from Fair Haven, NJ and the Mitterandos from Cohasset, MA were seen in Greenport, LI for a week. Grandpa Lou joined for a few days to help with fishing, biking, swimming, tennis and other fun activities.

California may have its "Governnator," but we have the Numerator." Ask Lou Mitt what this means.

-- 3 – The Mitterando Newsletter The Year in Review – Covering June 2009 through June 2010 Some living conditions have vastly improved for Laura, John and Nicole Vingara, and Laurie Monteforte. Their home has finally progressed. Not finished, but still awesome. (A Must See) Congratulations and good luck.

Pelliccia Family Update: We are quite happy to say that the youngest member of our family, 5 1/2 year old Victoria, has graduated Kindergarten this very morning!! (June 19th!!) She had a great year learning to read, cheerleading, and being a Daisy scout. She is ready for 1st grade.... Olivia, 11 years old, has just completed the 5th grade, and had a great year. She had perfect attendance all year, was a cheerleader, a classroom helper, and even joined the talent show! ...Anthony, 14, had a great Freshman year at Holy Trinity High School and even made the honor roll. He played football, basketball and baseball, and kept busy with the youth ministry and work.... Gianna has just graduated with honors from Holy Trinity High School on June 5th! She plans on majoring in education at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh. She is actually in Italy with Tony's family at this very moment! She is lucky enough to experience life in Italy for three weeks. We are very proud of each of them. (But we miss Gianna)

Dale Ingenito is now a full-time telecommuter since moving to NJ and is really enjoying it.

Once again Maria Mitterando showed her great creativity and organized the annual art show for Fair Haven – with thousands of works of art (including her kids) on display and in the local papers.

Ronald and Jennifer Cervone "finished" the addition to their house and then hosted a Thanksgiving Day Feast. There were 22 people for dinner from both sides of the family. They fried their first turkey and the house is still standing.

Jim Mitterando (MD) has been seen going to weekly dance lessons. Rumor has it he has been practicing for Carol Ann’s annual show.

CONGRATULATIONS ARE IN ORDER

Congratulations to Christian Blauvelt on his graduation from The Ohio State University! We know his future will be bright because a Buckeye always succeeds!!

Rich Mitterando has changed jobs (yes, again!!) This time to NASDAQ to ensure our equity markets are working at top speed.

Dee and Chris Van Lowe are enjoying their role as parents. Christopher and Michelle fill every day with so much fun and happiness. Their family has truly been blessed.

KID’S CORNER

Victoria Mitterando did an awesome job in her first piano recital. She and Liz may tour next Fall.

Victoria Pelliccia graduated Kindergarten TODAY!

Michelle Van Lowe is growing fast and becoming such a beautiful little girl. She's got such a bubbly personality and always with a big smile. Isabella Mitterando has been creating her own songs and excelling in her guitar lessons – “live” shows to come soon. Move over James Taylor and Taylor Swift!

The generation of Great Grandchildren have a new "Jets fan". Christopher Van Lowe loved watching every game of the season with his Grandpa (Michael Cervone). One of his first words was "Jets" . Great Grandpa would be proud!!!

Grace Cervone is a big sister, and she will tell anyone who might listen that she is a big sister and that her brother is "baby Roman."

Christopher Van Lowe is quite the drummer at only 1 1/2 years old! His grandpa (Michael Cervone) loves teaching him and can't believe how good he is getting!

Olivia Mitterando made her singing debut this year – flawlessly performing two solos and one duet! Look for her on American Idol in another 8 years.

TEEN SCENE

Gianna Pelliccia graduated Holy Trinity High School on June 5th and will be attending Mount Saint Mary College in the fall.

MILESTONE BIRTHDAYS

Richard Mitterando turned 70 years young in February.

A surprise party was thrown for Dale Ingenito for her big 6-0 birthday at the Vingaras by Jaclyn Shafer, the Vingaras and other family members. What a party it was! The theme was travel and wine (Dale’s favorites) and there were beautifully decorated food/wine stations representing places Dale has been (Italy, Greece, and France). People came from all over to attend. Thanks to all who worked so hard to make it such a memorable birthday.

KatieB (Blauvelt) turned 21 on June 1st….she didn’t waste any time having her first “legal” drink with friends and family at Miller’s Ale House!! Her birthday celebration continued in Atlantic City where boyfriend Anthony surprised her with dinner at Bobby Flay’s steakhouse, a show at the Borgata Comedy Club, and then gambling in the casino!!

Tyler Blauvelt turned 16 on June 6……..it was a “sweet” birthday shared with cousins at Adventure Land!!

-- 5 – The Mitterando Newsletter The Year in Review – Covering June 2009 through June 2010 WEDDINGS

Congratulations to Patrick Berg and Stephanie O'Brien on their marriage on December 12, 2009!

ANNIVERSARIES

In November Richie and Dee Mitterando celebrated 45 years of being best of friends (with benefits). Editor’s Note: Did I really have to type that last part! 

Rich and Maria Mitterando will be celebrating their 15th anniversary later this month. Plans are underway for a romantic getaway to South Carolina.

NEW HOME SWEET HOME

Dale Ingenito moved back to the NY/NJ area after 20 years in Maryland. After a 5 month stop over at the Vingara house while waiting for her new condo to be finished, she can now be found at [removed for web]

BAMBINOS ON THE WAY

Nothing to report

THE NEWEST FAMILY MEMBERS (BAMBINOS)

On July 26, 2009, Gavin Thomas Borawski, 8lbs, 5 oz., was born to Scott and Heidi Borawski fulfilling a dream-come-true for first time grandparents, Eileen and Joe Borawski. We know great-grandparents, Bill and Sadie Mitterando, are smiling down from heaven and watching over this new family member.

The Van Lowe Family is growing very fast! Their baby girl, Michelle Renee; was born Oct 23, 2009. She is adding so much joy and happiness to their family!

Jen Cervone “graced” the family with a son on March 19, 2010. Roman Thomas Cervone was born at 8:13AM at 8lbs, 10oz and 20" long.

It’s been a long cold winter and now it’s time for all of us to enjoy the warmer climate. We in the Mitterando Family have added three more babies to our families and I’m sure that there are many more additions.

ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY…

Craig Monteforte is completely on his own now, but your prayers are still a must.

Remember Richie and Dee, Aunt Margie, Uncle Johnny, Nancy Kujan, Cousin Lois Roberts, and Maureen Cervone, Bob Monteforte and many others in failing health.

GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN

It’s been a busy time for most of us. We lost some family members like Al LaRocca, who could never be replaced, and too many more to mention. Our condolences to all. OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES

Grace Cervone's newest favorite terms are: “Oh man!”, and “OMG”, not the short version.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Lou and Billy Mitt Jr. didn't get to spring training these past two years, but they did get to Citi Field to help the Mets. (And they can use all the help the can get!)

Irene Berg and Dale Ingenito had a blast on their birthday cruise to Bermuda last June. Despite not-so-great weather and 16 feet waves for a good part of the trip, they enjoyed every minute. It could have had something to do with the multiple trips to the ship’s champagne bar.

Billy Mitt. Jr. and Jason accompanied Scott and Keith Borawski on a deep sea fishing trip in July. All survived, and Bill and Jason caught a couple of Atlantic Bonitas. Note: Don't eat an Atlantic Bonita, it will make you terribly sick!!

Jaclyn Shafer, Dale Ingenito and friends Leslie Martinez and Brad headed to California for Jaclyn’s traveling 25th birthday party. The party started in Huntsville, Alabama, then they hopped a plane to California and visited San Francisco, the Napa and Sonoma wine regions and even had a hot air balloon ride over the country side.

Denise Mitterando and Eddie Celardo plus eight other “hood” friends took the Disney cruise in October to Key West, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel. Eddie and Denise were actually Dolphin Trainers for the day. We made them do tricks, fed them, gave them belly rubs and they gave us kisses and also a ride. If you want to take an awesome cruise, Disney fan or not; I highly recommend it!

Dale Ingenito traveled to Florida to attend Patrick and Stephanie Berg’s wedding. It was a beautiful, outdoor affair. Congratulations to Patrick and Stephanie!

The Sands Casino is Bethlehem, PA is just too close to cousins Dee and Richie in Lopatcong, NJ

Dale Ingenito, Robin Ingenito and Jaclyn Shafer rendezvoused in Orlando last fall with Leslie and other friends to attend Disney’s Food and Wine festival. They are all planning to do it again this October.

All are welcomed to come and view their photos and projects at http://upstatenycervones.shutterfly.com/, they update photos and what not as they take them.

Joseph Mitterando created a group for the Mitterandos on Facebook. It is a closed group so you either have to be requested to join or ask for permission. Just do a search on “Mitterando Family”

Ronald and Jen Cervone started a family tree on ancestry.com with photos. If you are a member or just want give it a try, look them up to add to their tree.

Vingara Happenings and 2009/2010 Year in Review - OK so this has NOT been edited by our editor Denise Mitterando - Sorry Denise that's what happens when you let Laura Vingara print the newsletters! June 2009 - The Vingara's would like to thank you all for John's vote for 2009 Father of the Year. We are not sure who enjoy displaying the trophy more – John or Laura – either way it was an honor to have it in our home for the 2009/2010 year. Our 2nd story house addition was still being worked on and we get one step closer to completion with each passing day. Nicole got to vacation in Florida with the Bart's. Our house was not big enough and it needed to grow a bit more, only it would grow in 2 foot incraments. The first 2 feet came courtesy of Laurie Monteforte. Laurie was moving to New Jersey for the long haul but she had been on family medical leave following Craig Monteforte's second open heart surgery/stroke and now it was just time to retire. With mom's 2 feet added to the house, what's 2 more??? These 2 more additional feet came from Craig Monteforte, as he moved from Maryland to New Jersey, to make his post stroke recovery at our home. Craig would receive the help of John, Laura, Nicole and Laurie while he could take the time to focus on his outpatient therapy including PT, OT and Speech. Craig also got daily pet therapy from Bella Vingara , who quickly claimed Craig's lap as her new favorite place to sit.

July 2009 - We were happy to co-host with Jaclyn Shafer the Festival alla Ingenito in honor of Dale's 60th Birthday. This party became the “first” of many in our new house, and just about a year after our renovation was “started”, note I didn't say completed. Now lets just say the party was terrific, we all had a great time! Cousin Irene Berg and Leslie Martinez were the long distance travelers for this festival. Timing is everything they say but for Dale Ingenito our timing was interesting to say the least as it was only the weekend before Dale's move to New Jersey. Yes, you guessed it... our house would grow by 2 more feet, these came from Dale Ingenito as she became a temporay member of the Vingara house. Note years earlier Laura always wished for her whole family to move from Maryland to New Jersey, she just never thought it would be all under one roof! Careful what you wish for, but having us all together really is one of life's blessings! The end of July brought us a much needed vacation, Laura, Nicole, Laurie, Craig, Corey and Dale headed to Smith Point for our annual camping trip. Thanks to all my Cousins, Aunts and Uncles who make this trip happen, your love and caring and hugs always make the trip awesome! Uncle Johnny we are so very glad you still have your green key and always share it with us! We were also blessed by a visit from the dishwasher fairy Robin Ingenito and trust me after washing dishes for a family of six this was a huge blessing. Thank you!

August 2009 – Laura Vingara celebrated her birthday with family, doing exactly what she wanted, she got to enjoy a wonderful dinner of steak and baked potatoes on our new deck. Thanks to Nicole and Dale for making such a great meal including my favorite guacomole.

-- 15 – The Mitterando Newsletter The Year in Review – Covering June 2009 through June 2010 September 2009 – Our month started off to a not so great start, when we received a call from Florida that my dad, Bob Monteforte was brought to the hospital. He had been in his apartment and not responding to calls, he needed to spend a few days few days in the hospital, he then was moved to a local nursing home for continued rehab. Laura was able to spend a few days with him in Florida, her and Laurie drove down to see dad. Nicole entered a new phase of her life as she became a freshman at the local highschool. Way to Go Nicole!

October 2009 – Craig continued with outpatient therapy, Laurie would continue with getting Craig to and from therapy, Dale continued to telecommute from her room, and make fabulous dinners, John continued to work a million hours, Nicole continued to help whereever she was needed and Laura well she just did what needed to get done. Our heart grew heavy and tears filled our family's eyes when Uncle Al passed away. Uncle Al will always have a huge place in our memories, he will always be a part of our live in our hearts. In our house all six of us continue to keep the LaRoccas in our thoughts and prayers. We also want to thank Danielle & Michael for commitment and dedication at keeping our family updated daily with Grandpa's struggle and Grandma's strength, your constant communtication was truly a blessing.

November 2009 - Nicole turned 15 she had the world most beautiful cake, a shimmery purple tiffany style box, which was perfect for such a wonderful daughter. The Vingara's had a fabulous Thanksgiving with ALL of her family, we celebrated in New Jersey with the Bart's, the Monteforte's, the Ingenito's, making this a first for Laura, she got the best of both worlds, not having to choose between the MD crew and the NJ Crew – because we could all be together. Laura and John also got to make a trip to Florida to visit dad and figure out some of the process for getting him moved to New Jersey, so Bob could be closer to family, especially since doctors were now recommending full time nursing care.

December 2009 – The Vingara/Monteforte Annual Gingerbread house decorating was held in our NJ home a new first for us, since Craig was now up in NJ. Our night was filled with lots of food, fun, laughter , 20 gingerbread houses to decorate and more candy then all could eat. We officially had one less house guest, as Dale Ingenito moved to her new condo right up the road. Congrats to you Aunt Dale your home is beautiful, We are thrilled you moved to NJ but now that you moved to your own place our kitchen misses your cooking. Kristina and Corey came to spend Christmas Eve with Dad, Craig Monteforte. We changed up up our tradition and hosted a make your own pizza night dinner for Christmas Eve, once again being blessed to have lots of family with us, it was also another “first” for us as we would be hosts for both Christmas Eve and Day. Making it “One of the Best Christmases for Laura as she finally didn't have to choose between our families, we had both John's side and Laura's side of the family, of couse we did miss all that weren't able to be with us on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. We also received a fabulous gift from Dale, Jaclyn, Robin and Bill which included getting work done in our basement especially to give John back his tv room so he could have some rest and relaxation.

January – New Years Eve was spent in grand style celebrating at the Barts. Craig spent New Years in Florida with fiance Alley Peters, as they were making plans for Craig to move down to Florida. His Maryland condo contents were packed up via Alley's hard work and dedication, with lots of help from some friends, Corey, Kristina and Laura. Packing up the house, while we're sad that one door for Craig would be closing we were all happy to see him smiling as a new door in Florida was opening for him and Alley. Craig and Alley spent lots of time on the road in between Florida, Maryland and New Jersey. Bill Ingenito and Janelle Marshall came to New Jersey to work on our basement, in preperation for John Vingara's Annual Superbowl Party. Laura and Nicole Vingara spent a fun day at American Girl with Kim and Morgan Vingara.

February – John Vingara hosted his Superbowl Party ,from his lazyboy recliner in our newly decked out (almost completed) NY Giant decorated basement. Thanks everyone for your hard work, judging from John's smile at game time he was quite happy. John, Laura and Nicole got to see the world's famous Harlem Globetrotters who put on quite a show, definitely worth the price of admission.

In March 2010 – Craig was able to hit the road from NJ to his new home in Florida with Fiance Alley Peters. We were also able to move my dad Bob Monteforte from Florida to a local nursing home in NJ. We hosted a plentiful lunch complete with a gluten free selection for Aunt Margie, Aunt Ellen , Judy Cervone, Cheryl Hydo, Renee Hydo, Zachary Hydo, Carm Mitterando, Phil (Cousin to Carm) Dale Ingenito, Richie Mitterando, Dee Mitterando and Bob Monteforte. Sorry Zac, next time we'll have cheetos and oreo's.

April 2010 – We hosted a huge sitdown dinner for Easter 2010, including, Laura, John, Nicole, Laurie, Dale, Denise, Richie, Dee, Kim, Morgan, Valerie, Tim, Stephanie, Natalie, Kristeen Kohrs and Bob (my dad). Mid April Laurie vacationed in Florida with her friend Paula from the Bronx. With some spare time on our hands, John, Laura and Nicole spent 3 nights running back and forth to Newark Airport, we distributed brownies, food and water to passengers stranded from the volcanic ash, we even hosted stranded passengers from London, Farah and her 9 year old son, Gianni for a night, so they could have a safe and restful night. Denise Mitterando jumped into the action one night and helped us in the distribution too.

May 2010 – We headed outside to do some much needed mulching and landscaping. Wow this home owner stuff sure does come with extra work. Thank you Val, Tim, Stephanie, Natalie, John, Nicole and Laurie for all your help, many hands made lighter work.

June 2010 - Proud to see Corey Monteforte graduate from Montgomery County HS – and wish him much luck and success in the future as he attends Univeristy of Maryland Baltimore County in the fall. The Vingaras are also happy to wish Congratulations to all the other family graduates, you all make us so proud! Mid-June, just prior to the picnic 2010 we were happy to host a quick pizza dinner with guests Dale Ingenito, Howard and Irene Berg.

As this year in review was written by Laura and comes to a close, I can be sure of some things, eventually my cousin Denise will think it's funny it added to her newsletter, I am sure some details and facts are jumbled or missing, sorry if I missed something good, but hey that happens after 40, I am thankful for facebook (did I just say that??) it's wonderful keeping up with all the happenings of our family, sometimes these posts make me smile, cry, laugh, remember a good time, pray for someone but most of all they keep me up with the most important thing in my life, family. I love you all! May you all be blessed for the rest of 2010 and may 2011 find us all gathered again for another Mitterando Family Reunion.
