Practical Application of Academic Standards

The title of the lesson is “Identifying Raceways, Boxes, and Fittings”

The student will read Module 8 in Electrical Level 1 and then participate in a classroom game which will require the students to recognize various raceways, boxes, and fittings. There will be 15 cards (one for each student), each having a picture of an electrical raceway, box, or fitting as well as a name of a different raceway, box, or fitting. The instructor will choose a student at random to start the game. The first student will identify his picture and then ask the group “who has ______?” The student who has that identifying name on his card will then identify his picture and ask the group “who has the ______?” If each student correctly identifies his picture with the correct identifying name, a successful trip around the room will be made. All students will be included once with the game ending with the student who started it.

Example: Start with the student who has card 6. He will look at his picture, recognize it as rigid conduit and ask aloud “who has rigid conduit?” The student with card 11who has the name rigid conduit on his card is then prompted to recognize his picture as square device box and ask aloud “who has square device box?” This will continue until the student with card 6 is prompted to start over.

Identifying the materials of the trade is a very important part of being a successful electrician. This activity gives students the opportunity to associate pictures with names and also builds confidence by allowing students to verbalize in a group setting.
