AP U.S. GOVERNMENT & POLITICS Unit III:

Objectives: Students will understand that effective suffrage is a fundamental principle of a democracy and the political party provides the access. The campaign road to Election Day and the overwhelming financial structures that have infiltrated the political process are necessary to defining party involvement. In this unit, students will analyze the electoral process, campaign financing and its reforms, the parties’ impact on the political process and the functions and structures of the mass media as it impacts public opinion, voter perception, campaign strategies, electoral outcomes, agenda development and the images of public officials and candidates.

Assignment Schedule:

Week 7(10/05-10/09)

Topic: Voting and Elections Schmidt: Chapters 9: Voting and Elections

Monday – 10/5 – Field Trip to UCF . For those going on the Field Trip, watch the following video prior to going so that you will understand the difference between a primary and a caucus. . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_95I_1rZiIs . For those not going on the Field Trip, you will have a cartoon assignment to work on Third Parties in class on Monday.

Due Tuesday, 10/6  TEST TODAY on Unit II – Ch. 10, 11 & 15 from the O’Connor Book (hard copy, NOT the online copy) o Multiple choice and a mini-essay

Due Wednesday, 10/7 . Ch. 9 Assignment from new text – the following portions are due: o Key Terms #1-12 o Extended Response Question #1 and #2 o Use your hard copy book since we didn’t get the online text codes distributed yet – you will find the info in Ch. 12 of your hard copy text.

Assignments: Due Monday, 10/12:  FRQ Brainstorm from slide 18 of the Unit III power point (turned in via Edmodo).  All questions in the Unit III power point notes pages (starting with slide 21) are to be answered and turned in via Edmodo.  Current Event Political Cartoon on Campaigns/Elections – find a cartoon on the 2012 Presidential or 2014 Congressional campaigns-elections for this assignment. Make sure that you print out the cartoon and the Political Cartoon Analysis Form (see docs and forms page) to place in your Current Events folder today.

Due Tuesday, 10/13:  Watch the 5 minute video “Does your vote count? The Electoral College explained: o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9H3gvnN468  Don’t forget the quiz today on Ch. 9.

Due Thurs., 10/15:  Research on assigned group Electoral College Reform Proposal – be prepared to teach in class today – make sure that we have something to look at while you’re presenting and that you are ready to answer our questions  RETEST AFTER SCHOOL TODAY FOR THE UNIT II EXAM o Ticket for the Retest: Complete the Unit II Retest Review Questions (see docs and forms page)
