Mrs. Cancino’s Fifth Grade Band Newsletter April 24, 2017 Dear Band Parents:
All concerts finished! Great job to ALL of my students who performed. You should all be very proud of your performance. Very nicely done Any students who weren’t able to attend received their make-up assignment this week, and it is due no later than May 15th.
We have about 6 weeks left to the school year, and I mapped out the rest of the book, leaving 11 playing tests. From here to June 1st, we will have a playing test (or two!) during each class. The schedule is below: May 1/2--#88 *finished at Matula, Mitchell, Barnhart May 3/4—p. 20 m.3-7 *finished at Matula, Mitchell, Barnhart May 8/9--#95 May 10/11--#96 May 15/16--#103 May 17/18--#111 May 22/23--#126 May 24/25--#127 May 29/30--#131 May 31/June 1--#134 + p. 42, Ab concert scale I realize that the timeline may fluctuate slightly, doubling up on tests or kids at assemblies, field trips, field days, absent, no school, etc. but this is what I’m going to try and stick to. If you can help keep your child on track, as far as practicing, we’ll be good. I went over most of these exercises this week, and some classes have already knocked out the first couple of tests. We’re not done yet, still 200+ points to earn!
All school-owned instruments will be due back to me, with any accompanying accessories (i.e. cleaning rod/swab, mouthpiece cap, ligature, valve oil, etc.) on June 1, 2017. Any instruments not returned will have a debt letter attached to your child’s school record for the full replacement value of the instrument, until the instrument is returned. Student-owned instruments should be looked at by a repair technician over the summer so they are ready for the fall (*brass instruments will probably seize up if not played all summer…).
I will also be listening to Band Ninja Belt tests each class, once playing tests are completed. Students need to make sure they have prepared their graded test before working on the fun stuff, and realize that belt tests must be played accurately before they’ll be checked off. No points awarded for effort and a cute smile—they have to really learn it to earn it!
I’ll have grades all entered by the end of the day today, remembering that this quarter’s grade will appear on the report card.
Have a great week! Mrs. Cancino Band Director: Matula, Mitchell, Barnhart, Parks [email protected] http://www.ccboe.com/departments/music/
