Honors International Scholars Stipend Application for Travel in May 2012 Term

The Honors International Scholars Stipend provides Honors students with overseas opportunities by offering 10 stipends, contingent upon funding. The amount of each award depends upon program costs and funds available. This year’s stipends are earmarked for travel to Taizhou University in China during JSU’s May 2012 term.

To qualify, a student must

o have completed an Honors class at JSU with a final grade of B or better o be a member of the JSU Honors Program. Applications for the Honors Program are available at http://www.jsu.edu/cas/honors/forms/honors_application.pdf o have a minimum 3.0 GPA

Stipends for 2012 will cover 3 hours JSU tuition, airfare, insurance, and room and board while in China. This stipend application is also available at (http://www.jsu.edu/cas/honors/honors_forms.html); deadlines for receipt of application are Elite Honors Scholars ONLY: October 15, 2011 All other Honors students: October 31, 2011.

Students are responsible for passport and visa costs (approximately $350 for both). Spending money of approximately $40 per day while travelling is also recommended (approximately $500). Passport, as well as visa, costs must be received by the Director of the Honors Program before December 1, 2011. Application Instructions 1. Type the following categories and responses on one page only:  Name (Last, First):  Local Address:  Permanent Address:  Local Phone Number:  Preferred e-mail Address:  Major(s) and Expected Graduation Date:  JSU ID #:  List of any financial aid or scholarships you are currently receiving (just the award, not the amount).

2. Program of Study Statement: On a second page, explain in 500 words or less your reason for applying, and how this experience will support your studies and career plans.

3. Print your application responses. Print and sign the list of stipend requirements (next page). 4. Include with 1-3 above a current résumé, including activities, honors, and a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher (no more than two pages). 5. Return these four items to Dr. Steven J. 1. Stipends and travel are contingent upon funding. Stipends are competitive and are awarded by the Honors Program Board.

2. Stipend recipients will attend all classes for EH 399.

3. Honors International Scholars Stipend recipients will complete their course of study and will submit a 1,500-word report detailing the trip’s impact on their studies and long-term goals. This report should be submitted no later than the exam period for the May 2012 term. Honors International Scholars Stipend recipients will also submit, with their reports, electronic copies of a minimum of three photographs from their study in China. The text of this report and the photos may be used in Honors Program publications.

4. Honors International Scholars Stipend recipients agree to refund and forfeit, in its entirety, the Honors International Scholars Stipend should they fail to complete EH 399.

5. Honors International Scholars Stipend recipients must read the U.S. Department of State’s travel warnings, consular information sheets, and/or public announcements regarding the country(ies) they will be visiting (see www.state.gov/travelandbusiness).

I acknowledge that I have read and understood the above list for the Honors International Scholars Stipend. I understand that the Honors Program will not approve requests for travel- study scholarships in countries with a current travel warning and may not approve requests for travel-study in countries with a current public announcement. I further understand that the Honors Program retains the right to request reimbursement of unexpended funds if a travel warning is issued after the approval of the stipend but before the date of departure or if a travel warning is issued while I am abroad, thus obliging me to leave the country before the completion of the program.
