GENERAL PURPOSE: To inform

SPECIFIC PURPOSE: To inform the class about the origin, development and effect of tattoos on society.

THESIS STATEMENT: Understanding the tattoo’s origin, purpose and safety measures will help students make an

1 informed and healthy decision about their own possible tattoos.

INTODUCTION I. ATTENTION GETTER: Catherine Grognard once said, “The tattoo[ed body] is a unique object- a naïve and provocative moving fresco.” Take a moment to consider what it means to you, to have the opportunity to be living art, to be living art permanently. Would you jump at chance or run away.

II. NEED: In 2002 one in every eight Americans had a tattoo. According to the American Society of Dermatological Surgery half of those people in from 2002 with tattoos will eventually want theirs removed.

III. CREDIBILITY: I can discuss this information with you because I have researched body art extensively and can speak from experience.

IV. PREVIEW SENTENCE: In order to increase your knowledge of tattoos, so you’ll so some you know will be less likely to regret their possible tattoos I’m going to focus on the following areas:

MAIN BODY I. History, according to Nicholas Thomas in “Tattoo: Bodies Art and Exchange in the Pacific and the West”

A. The accepted belief is the tattoo originated with the people it the pacific islands. B. The Tahitian word for strike of mark is “tatau” comes from the sound of tapping ink into the skin. C. III. Tips according to Karen Hudson’s Safety Check List A. Getting the Tattoo 1. Ask to see autoclave(Pressure cooker that cleans all instruments) and sterilization certificate. 2. Artist should be wearing gloves 3. Ask artist about experience 5. New sterile needles should be removed from an autoclave bag in front of you. 6. Ask to see finish examples of previous work. B. After Care 1. Leave bandage on 2. Wash and treat the fresh tattoo as you would a cut or scrape, with bactine. 3. Some scabbing is normal, but don’t pick. It is itches snap it. (Heavy scabbing is a sign of a poor quality tattoo.)

CONCLUSION

I. SUMMARY: A tattoo can be a very beautiful and artistic way to express yourself, provided you know a little behind its history, common purposes and what to look for. I sincerely hope this information helps you or some you know make a safe and regret free decision
