Vestibular Rehabilitation
The aim of these exercises is to challenge and improve your balance. You may need to stand near a wall initially, for confidence and safety. To get the best out of your exercises, repeat them little and often throughout the day.
Postural Stability Exercise 1
Stand with your feet at shoulder width apart and keep your eyes open. Look straight ahead at a simple target on the wall.
Aim to hold your position without swaying, gradually increasing the length of time you can maintain a steady stance.
Repeat in the following positions:-
Feet together Step standing Heel to toe
You may need to start with your arms outstretched to help your balance, then go on to practice them with:-
Arms down by your sides Arms folded across your chest
Exercise progression (Carry out the exercise on different surfaces. Softer surfaces make your balance system work harder)
Hard Floor Carpet Foam Pillow
To challenge your balance even further, you can repeat these exercises with your eyes closed.
Postural Stability Exercise 2
1. Walk down a corridor or hallway, turn your head in one direction for a few steps and then turn your head the opposite way for a few steps.
Progress this exercise by moving your head more frequently as you are walk.
2. Frequently change direction and turn around whilst walking. At first make large turns, gradually making smaller and smaller turns. Make sure you turn in both directions. For more information please visit: www.gloshospitals.nhs.uk/physio/dizzy EM Feb 2013
