Reports To: Director of Commercial Technology

General Summary  Manage Chemcial Specialties Research and Development (R&D)/technology globally  Serve the Chemical Specialties Business Unit as technology leader and Business Unit team  Serve of Michelman’s technology leadership team

Primary Responsibilities  Manage the Chemical Specialties technology and projects for product development globally  Manage the product development for Chemical Specialties including plans for innovation, growth and intellectual property  Establish and manage the Chemical Specialties R&D budget for salaries, expenditures (including Travel and Entertainment)  Establish and conduct the performance accountabilities, performance management and performance reviews  Serve on Michelman’s Technology Management Team  Function as the Technology representative on the Chemical Specialties Business Unit team  Maintain a high level of focus on customers and prospects and display the customer/Michelman focus  Participate with the Health Environmental Regulatory Affairs (HERA) team to develop procedures to assure compliance; implement regulatory knowledge to support commercial activities  Understand international inventories and REACH to be able to assure global compliance and to provide leadership within the technical community on such matters  Participate in appropriate industry/market trade organizations/leadership

Secondary Responsibilities  Individual Contribution/Manager: o Individual contributor component for some time (1-2 years) on a part-time basis o Focus on materials/process to be more effective technical leader o Less than 50% for lab effort  Strategic Planning: o Set strategic direction of Chemical Specialties technical infrastructure and establish tactical approach and metrics

Other  Serve on Michelman’s North American People Leadership Team  Perform related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities  Able to lead and manage in a team environment  Language: English with a second language (French, German, Chinese) a plus  Technical Knowledge: o Emulsification, additives, formulations in key, adjacent markets o Management-team, leadership, department, cross-functional  Customer Facing Interactions: o Presentations, key account interactions (including senior management), trial experience, global customer experience o Customer key base with key account interactions (including senior management) o Familiarity with customer processing and requirements o Trial experience o Global customer experience  Supplier/Sourcing: o Knows co-suppliers and products, materials usage, chemical classes o Additives o Value of key suppliers Created: March 17, 2010 Page 2, Technical Manager (Chemical Specialties) job description

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (continued)  Formulation Base: o Global knowledge  International: o Cultural awareness and sensitivity o Management of International companies

Education and Experience  Education/Degree: o Bachelors of Science required with a degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Engineering, Polymer Science o MBA or specific business formal training preferred  Experience: o 10+ years of relevant experience o 5+ years management experience  Industry Background: o Target markets, formulation o Emulsification o Allied industries-surfactants, key co-supplier (emulsions/polymers)  Management Skills: o Technology/R&D/laboratory/people development, o Global management of remote locations and staff o Budgets/T&E o Performance management  Community Leadership (Desirable) o Demonstrate commitment to community as well as leadership

Physical Demands and Work Environment  Travel: up to 25%, including international (15% typical) by car and airplane  Ability to work in a team environment  Normal office environment but may be required to enter/work in a chemical plant environment  Able to wear required PPE when necessary
