General Course Description: This course is an overview of child growth and development; stages of physical, cognitive, social and emotional growth from prenatal through adolescence. It is designed to be taken as an associate degree elective/non-transferable course in preparation for the lower division eight (LD8) as designed by the Curriculum Alignment Project (CAP). See www.childdevelopment.org for more info on the LD8. Contents are included in CBEDS 4400 & 4321.
College Prerequisite(s): none HS/ROCP Prerequisite(s): none Advisories/Recommendations: Reading & Writing level one course below transfer level.
Course Content: Developmental milestones from conception through adolescence. Theory & historical perspectives of child development. Biological & environmental influences on development. Influence of diversity, family, culture & abilities on development. Observation and assessment of development. Current local & global issues in child development.
Competencies and Skill Requirements (Use additional pages as necessary.) Where appropriate, please incorporate standards being used (e.g. CTE standards). At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to: Compare and contrast major theories, principles & research methods of human development as they relate to children. Analyze ways in which prenatal development influences later growth & development. Define the stages of development including social-emotional, cognitive, physical, & language. Evaluate the influence of diversity, family, culture & abilities on development. Research & evaluate current local and global issues in child development.
