Cree Naming Poems Your Given Name______

After brainstorming in your journals, list some names you have come up with for yourself:

Choose one name for yourself: ______

What QUALITIES and BEHAVIORS do you relate to this name? Be sure to list those that also relate to you, inside and outside. Refer back to your list in your journal.

Star (*) those qualities and behaviors that best relate to you – the ones you will definitely incorporate into your poem . Example: With the name Flaming Sunset, these are some qualities and behaviors:

*takes your breath away * ephemeral * makes you look up in awe *leaves you longing for more *remind you of the world’s wonder *keeps you hopeful for tomorrow *makes you feel powerful and huge * the temperature drops right after it *colorful and beautiful *darkness follows

Follow these guidelines for writing your poem:

1. Word process 2. Write at least 15 lines 3. Use your new name as your title 4. Follow the format used in the Cree naming poems we read (and the ones that appear in our text). 5. Start your poem with the line, “Her/his name tells of how it was with her/him” 6. Use metaphor and/or simile to explain the qualities you have chosen 7. Include a good ending that fits with your list of qualities and your name 8. You also need to include an illustration on the same sheet as your poem. This illustration should visually express the name and characteristics in your poem.
