How to Write a Lab

How to Write a Lab- Use this exact Format to help write a Lab report Note: The final lab report should be neatly written in black/blue pen or typed. Any thing underlined must be in the lab

Title of Lab

Problem: Identify the problem. It must be in question form.

Hypothesis: Answers the problem above in an If…Then statement.

Materials: list all materials with the amounts needed (bullet-point format)

Procedures: Clear, step-by-step directions to carry out the entire lab. Note: Make sure directions are clear and someone else using the procedures can re- do your experiment. Number each step!

Data: graphs, charts, tables, drawings, observations - ALL data should include proper titles/headings and correct units Analysis: Analysis questions related to the lab should be answered completely and will help you connect the lab to what we are learning.

Conclusion: must be in paragraph form, based only on your group’s data with correct units, using the RERUNS format below. The conclusion, following RERUNS format, is meant to answer the problem of the lab. Do NOT write out the letters R.E.R.U.N.S.! Worth 40-50 points! Each student must write his/her own conclusion- unless you are turning in one lab with your partner or group. Copied conclusions will earn 0 points for the entire lab!!!

R.E.R.U.N.S format (1-3 paragraphs for the entire conclusion) Restate the problem Explain the experiment (summarize the procedures in 2-3 sentences) Results (Write out ALL your data results. [observations, measurements] Don’t forget units! Discuss what the results indicate about the lab. Be specific, if you have 3 different samples, with many tests, discuss the results of each sample for all the tests separately!) Uncertainties (discuss what did or might go wrong during the lab and how that can affect your experiment’s results) New Ideas or Alternatives (suggest a similar experiment but with changes made) Show Understanding (Did your lab experiment support or reject your hypothesis? Be specific and explain why.)
