Recreation Commission Meeting April 3, 2012 @ 4:45pm Town Offices

Members Present: Chad Denning, Jason Stadler, Jerry Coogan, Allison MacLean, Laura James, Keith Pomkoski

Easter Egg Hunt Mr. Denning said they have between 2,000 – 3,000 eggs to stuff for the event on Saturday morning. He knew of several people who would be helping to fill eggs and put them out on the common on Saturday morning.

Budget Committee Meeting Mr. Denning said the meeting was about the CIP and he felt the Budget Committee was being very trying. They were approved to make the Bucklin Beach building ADA compliant, install low-flow fixtures, paint the building, and shingle the roof. They did not agree with having clapboards put on, installing new windows or new doors. He noted that some of the Budget Committee went into the building during his vacation without his knowledge. He thought it was unfortunate that he was not able to walk the building with them to answer questions. It was decided that more details of the building refurbishment should be provided by Mr. Denning at the next Budget Committee meeting the following Monday evening at 7:00pm.

Spring Interns Mr. Denning said that his Winter Wild intern just completed his commitment. He also has a graphic arts intern who has helped with logos and materials for Market on the Green.

MBC Public Hearing – Monday Mr. Denning said that this meeting was for the final votes of the Budget Committee on April 9th.

Dave Armstrong Grantham/New London Softball League Mr. Denning said that Mr. Armstrong also ran the adult softball league last year. Marsha Googins is the Recreation Director in Grantham. They were hopeful that some of the teams from the Lebanon league would join the Grantham/New London league as there were too many teams signed up for Lebanon.

Summer Beaches/Staffing Mr. Denning said that he and Mrs. James have met with an individual who has a lot of experience running summer programs. She will train their staff for the summer once the staff is hired. He felt she could be a big benefit to the program and help make some positive changes. He noted that they are way ahead for sign-ups for the day camp and Jr. Outdoor Adventures. The Procter camp will be cancelled this year and Gen from Ellie’s will do an outdoor cooking camp.

He hopes to reach out to the teens in the area with Kearsarge Outdoor Adventures.

Market on the Green Mr. Denning said they are trying to sell 400 50/50 tickets. The winning will be $10,000. The $10,000 that goes to Market on the Green is to pay for the children’s arts and crafts portion of the Market on the Green.

New London Triathlon Mr. Denning said that there would be a meeting on Friday about this. He felt the hospital would be looking for more support from the Town for this activity as well as other parts of Hospital Days.

New Instructors/Summer Ideas Mr. Denning is looking for people who have ideas and who can help with camps. Mr. Stadler noted the new zip-lines going in at Mt. Sunapee as a possible direction they could venture towards.

Summer Adult Programs Mr. Denning said that right now they only have the softball league. Mr. Stadler said that the basketball league used to play at the high school but now there is a charge to play there so they have stopped. Now they play at the middle school if someone is there monitoring it and opening and closing the facility for them. They sometimes go to Sunapee to play for free.

Van Summer Use Mr. Denning said he had a minor accident with the van this winter. It is out of alignment right now and is being repaired.

Beach Ordinance and Summer Census Mr. Denning said they would continue gathering this information this year.

The meeting adjourned at 5:48pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Kristy Heath, Recording Secretary Town of New London
