GROUP CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONSTATA SOCIAL INTERNSHIPSUMMER 2016 Tata Social InternshipProject Profile 2016 Background of the ongoing Project that the Tata Social Intern will be participating in (in terms of why it is necessary in the India, district and Company context; what are BACKGROUND the other linked projects in that area that the Company is working on (if relevant); history of how long the Company has been working on that type (topic: as in water management) of project; current status of project implementation; next stage of the project that the Intern would need to contribute into; how the Tata Social Internship project fits into the future stage of the project. ‘Parag’ is an initiative of the Tata Trusts that supports development, dissemination and use of children’s literature in Indian languages, to promote reading among children. Education research widely recognizes the role of easy access and meaningful use of children’s literature in classrooms and homes. In India, where a large number of children attending government schools are first generation learners, the access to quality and contextual reading material becomes essential. With absence of any text at home children are introduced to reading and writing only at the age of 6 and find it very challenging. Yet, only a handful of publishers in India are engaged in quality publishing of children’s literature in Indian languages. The lion’s share of literature for children is available in English and targeted at urban readers. Secondly, school libraries can be the most efficient source of access to literature for majority of children, who are enrolled in schools, but do not have books at home. However, 74% schools in India do have functional libraries. Over the past seven years Parag has supported the development of quality children’s literature in regional languages. Parag supported books have original stories that are both contextual and global, cover a variety of genres including picture books, activity books, non-fiction, animated stories and teacher resource material. Parag has supported school and community libraries for ensuring access to quality books. It has created avenues to promote young talented authors and illustrators. Parag workshops and programmes have trained librarians, teachers and educators besides creating resources on setting up and running active libraries, book selection and using libraries to enhance reading skills. While significant amount of work has been undertaken to strengthen reading for children, much of it is undocumented. As Parag aims to expand its scope to reach many more children across India, there is need for documenting best practices, challenges and success stories to advocate the case for children’s libraries as integral to schools and education, with policy makers and schools. KEY Key Deliverables (as you see them at this stage. The detailed Key Deliverables can be DELIVERABLES fine tuned during the Induction at the location and will be noted into the Tata Social Internship Intern Appraisal Form during the 1st week of induction at the location.)  Visiting at least three different library locations to document (audio-visual) best practices including read aloud sessions and activities related to books and leading to increased interest in reading  Three short videos covering three aspects of Parag – book development, illustrator’s course offered by Parag, and library educator’s course  A master film on Parag that puts together all different aspects of Parag
