Connect to Success PURPOSE

The mission statement of the Connect to Success Program is to enable students with the knowledge necessary to acquire a high school diploma and the opportunity to become life long learners and contribute to our community. This program helps students earn credits through the Edgenuity lab so students can graduate from high school.

2015-2016 SCHOOL CALENDAR

Classes will begin Monday, August 10, 2015, and continue until Thursday, July 14, 2016. Classes will be held on Monday through Thursday, 4:30-8:30 p.m. following HCISD Calendar.

REGISTRATION

Students will register at the Harlingen CISD Intake Center at 905 East Tyler.

TEACHER WORKDAY

The teacher will work for 4 hours a day, Monday through Thursday from 4:30p.m.-8:30 p.m.

COURSE OFFERINGS

The Edgenuity classroom and virtual tutors provide the following courses. Courses offer comprehensive standards-aligned content that incorporates universal design for learning (UDL) principles with quality standards for online courses. This lesson structure promotes academic success in an online learning environment. Harlingen CISD Evening School of Opportunities will offer the following Edgenuity courses:

DAILY SCHEDULE

Classes will be held four days a week Monday through Thursday from 4:30p.m.-8:30 p.m.

SUBSTITUTES

A substutute will be provided as needed. The teacher will notify the Evening School of Opportunities supervisor no later than 10:00 p.m. if a substitute is needed for the following day. On the day of the absence the teacher must make contact with the supervisor between 6:00 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. to confirm that a substitute has been obtained.

TEACHER CERTIFICATION

The teacher for Connect to Success Program Lab is a Texas certified teacher. Teachers from KEYS Academy that will serve as teachers of records for the Connect to Success Program are also Texas Certified teachers.

DISCIPLINE

The Evening School of Opportunities, Connect to Success Program teacher is expected to follow district policies with regard to discipline. Students will be expected to follow the rules or will be withdrawn. Students will not be permitted habitual trips to restrooms and water fountains.

ATTENDANCE All attendance regulations must be met for a student to receive credit. Teacher will keep the attendance.

Regular attendance will be expected of all students as a minimum requirement for successful performance.

Students that are absent should call or have their parents telephone the student absentee reporting number 427-3515. Attendance will be monitored.

GRADING

A……90-100 B……80-89 C……75-79 D……70-74 F……Below 70

TEXTBOOKS

a) Textbooks and book cards will be issued to the teachers on as needed basis.

b) Book cards must be filled out when the books are issued.

c) The book number will be marked in the teacher’s grade book.

d) The teacher will inform the students that if books are not returned, their records will not be cleared.

LESSON PLANS

Lesson plans will be collected and reviewed every two weeks by the Evening School of Opportunities supervisor.

QUALITY OF WORK

The quality of all school work will be equal to that required in the regular school program. All phases of the school work will comply with Texas Education Agency Regulations. Credits earned in the Harlingen CISD Evening School of Opportunities are transferable to accredited high schools.

SCHOOL DRESS

Shirts and blouses should be appropriate for school settings. Excessively short shorts, dresses, skirts, are not permitted. Muscle shirts, transparent attire, tank tops, spaghetti straps, low cut attire are not permitted. Oversize clothing, ripped pants, shorts, skirts that show under garments are not permitted. Attire with gang, drug, alcohol, or sexual paraphenilia and/or other offensive designs or logos are not permitted. English as a Second Language ESL & General Equivalency Diploma GED CLASSES

PURPOSE

The mission statement of adult education and literacy is to ensure that all adults who live in Texas have the skills necessary to function in their personal and family lives, in the workplace, and in the community.

2015-2016 SCHOOL CALENDAR

Classes begin the last week of August 2015 and classes conclude the first week of June 2016. Harlingen CISD school calendar will be followed.

REGISTRATION

Students are able to call Region One or Harlingen CISD Parental Involvement/Dropout Prevention office to place their name on a waiting list. Students will be called in mid October and given an appointment to register and take pre-assessments the last week of October. Classes will begin on August 31, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at KEYS Academy. Classes will continue through June 1, 2016.

TEACHER’S WORKDAY Teachers have two hours per week designated as a teacher workday. Their teaching workday is designated on Monday through Wednesday from 6:30p.m.-8:30pm. Thursday is a workday for the teachers.

SUBSTITUTES

Substitute teachers will be provided by Region One as needed. Arrangements will be made as needed.

TEACHER CERTIFICATIONS

Teachers are certified by SBEC.

DISCIPLINE

All students receive an Adult Education Program Handbook and Code of Conduct and are expected to abide. Failure to meet any expectation may result in a supervisor meeting with a student and documenting such meeting. Failure to comply will result in the student being dismissed from the program.

ATTENDANCE

Students who do not meet the minimum required instructional hours (must attend 70% of the time) by the pre-determined assessment date will be dropped from the program. Any exceptions will be made at the supervisor’s discretion.

GRADING This program does not issue numerical grades.

TEXTBOOKS

Textbooks will be provided by Brownsville ISD Adult Education Program. ESL Classes/Breakthroughs and Step Forward and GED/ Stech Vaughn Pre GED and GED books.

LESSON PLANS

Teachers are to submit lesson plans weekly.

QUALITY OF WORK

Students and teachers are expected to take pride in the work they complete. Teachers are monitored on their over all quality of work.

TAKS TUTORIALS

PURPOSE

The TAKS Tutorials is a program that allows students to receive tutoring for the exit level TAKS test in the evening. The program tutors students in the areas of ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Math and Science tutoring are offered during the school year and ELA and Social Studies tutoring is added during the summer. Students are invited to these tutoring sessions allowing for a place away from their high school campus. These students feel more comfortable in a setting where everyone is in the same situation.

TAKS tutorials are held throughout the school year in 3 cycles. The cycles will follow the HCISD school calendar and the TEA testing calendar.

STAAR/EOC TUTORIALS

PURPOSE

The STAAR/EOC Tutorials is a program that allows students to receive tutoring for the exit Level STAAR/EOC test in the evening. The program tutors students in the areas of ALGEBRA I, ENGLISH I, ENGLISH II, BIOLOGY and US HISTORY. Algebra I and English I tutoring are offered during the school year and English II, Biology and US History tutoring are added during the summer. Students are invited to these tutoring sessions allowing for a place away from their high school campus. These students feel more comfortable in a setting where everyone is in the same situation.

DAILY SCHEDULE

Each TAKS-STAAR/EOC tutorial class is offered for 1.5 hours. The teacher works a total of 3.5 hours per class and 30 minutes are used for the teacher/s to prepare.
