Communication: TIDE Swimming has several modes of communicating information to its members. 1. Website The TIDE swimming website is ymcacolumbus.org/delaware-swim-team. The site has up-to-date information about the team, meets, and events. Please check this site frequently for general announcements, Dates, and other important links. 2. Mailbox System Each family will have a folder in our mailbox system located by the Bulletin Board. You will find important notices, awards, etc. Please check it weekly. Also, each Coach and Committee member will have a folder to facilitate the transfer of information. 3. Parent Meetings Held once a month on the 1st Wednesday of each month usually during swim practice 4. Bulletin Board Will post important information from the coaches and latest news and updates regarding team and meets 5. E-Mail Please provide your primary/secondary e-mail address so that we may forward important announcements, etc. If your e-mail address changes during the season, please notify the Head Coach

Swimmers Responsibilities: 1. With coach, set goals for meets and the season -Maintain a Log Book 2. Be on time to Practices and meets 3. Bring all your swimming gear 4. Bring water to practices 5. Work as a TEAM at practices 6. See coaches before and after swims at meets 7. Always cheer on other TIDE swimmers 8. Carry your YMCA membership card at all times 9. Carry your USA Swimming ID card at all times

TEAM SPIRIT!!!!!!! TEAM SPIRIT!!!!!!! TEAM SPIRIT!!!!!!!!! Team Acceptance Protocol/Level Selection 1. Current team members in good standing from our past season and their siblings, attend meets, and fulfill their 4 session volunteering requirement 2. Any athlete wishing to join TIDE swimming for the 1st time, will be invited for a skills assessment during the 1st week of season. Skills assessment is as follows: 1) Swimmers will be asked to swim 1. 8 & under 50 yards free, 1 lap secondary strokes (Bk, Br, Fly) 9 & over 50 yards free, 50 yards secondary strokes 2. Tread water for 45 seconds 3. Forward competitive dive

2) Coaches will independently grade their swims on a 0 - 3 scale 0= cannot perform 2= needs minor work 1= needs major work 3= understands stroke 3) Coaches will add up scores, meet to discuss swimmers appropriate level to ensure no over-crowding and efficiency of practices. 4) Post Results by Saturday of 1st week on Website, Bulletin Board, and by email 5) The SECOND week of practice will be a trail run to make sure swimmers were placed in the correct level, so changes may occur

TIDE Swimming Programs

The coaching staff is responsible for team practices, choice of meets, and choices of events at the various types of meets. Coaches have the authority to remove athletes who are disruptive at practices or meets. All coaches welcome your questions.

These swimmers will be taught how to swim all 4 strokes legally, taught starts, and taught turns over the course of the Winter season

Jetties Waves

These swimmers will be taught how to improve all 4 strokes, their starts, and their turns. They will also learn how to use the Pace clock.

Under Tows Currents

These swimmers are capable of swimming all 4 strokes legally and are Zone caliber swimmers. They will keep improving their strokes, turns, and starts, but will be introduced to aerobic/anaerobic training and how it relates to practice/races.

TIDE Swimming Rules:

1. We will enforce a CLOSED DECK POLICY. No parents on deck during their swimmers practice time. If you need to speak with a coach, please see them before or after practice. Please make sure no swimmer is exposed to this conversation. 2. Swimmers, parents, and coaches are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful manner that will bring credit to themselves, TIDE swimming, and the Delaware YMCA. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated at the YMCA, at practices, or at swim meets. 1st Offense Meeting coach/swimmer/parent 2nd Offense Meeting coach/swimmer/parent/aquatic director 3rd Offense Meeting with possible removal from team 3. Respect the YMCA facility or any TIDE swimming gear; any swimmer causing damage will be charged for the repair or replacement of the damaged property. 4. Be open in your communication with your child, Parent committee, the YMCA, and the coaching staff. The last thing we need is surprises. 5. At swim meets, if a problem arises in regards to officiating, running of the meet, or wrong time/placing for your child, please inform coach ASAP. DO NOT take matters into your own hands. 6. All swimmers must show their membership cards to enter the YMCA facility. Swimmers, DO NOT enter pool unless a coach is on deck. 7. Swimmers should put their swim bags or personal belongings ON THE BLEACHERS during practice so walkways remain clear 8. Swimmers using YMCA towels for practice are to pick them up and put in the appropriate containers before leaving the YMCA. Towels should not be left in the locker rooms or in any other areas 9. All swimmers must wear our Team Suits and Team Caps at all swim meets 10. At meets, all swimmers must arrive at least 15 minutes before assigned warm-up time. The TIDE Swim Team warms up as a team and not as individuals. Swimmers arriving late for warm-ups may be replaced on a relay. For safety purposes, swimmers MUST enter the water FEET FIRST during all warm-ups, whether it be a meet or practice 11. Family must volunteer in at least 3 swim team events PLUS the 1 position at the Orange Crush Invite.

Volunteering:

We will be asking for family participation at our home meets, away meets, invitational's, and fundraiser's. To make these activities run smoothly, 1 or 2 weeks prior to any activity, our Meet Chairperson will post what positions need to be filled for that particular activity. To make sure our home meets run smoothly, the Meet Chairperson will place a reminder in your Family Folder 1 week prior to the meet.

MUST volunteer in at least 3 Swim Team events PLUS 1 position at the Orange Crush Invite.

Due to the large number of swimmers on the team, swimmers are only to attend practices for their group unless parents obtain permission from coach.

Those swimmers making Zones or YMCA Nationals will keep practicing until their swim meet.

YMCA Invitationals and Away Swim Meets

1. Check Website, Bulletin Board, or email for upcoming YMCA meet information

2. Two weeks prior to Meet Entry "Due Date" : a. Check Bulletin Board for swimmer sign-up for a particular meet b. Write your child's name in appropriate space to secure entry

3. Three days prior to "Due Date": a. An Entry Report will be sent out to all members, this report shows 1. which swimmers are attending meet 2. what events they will be swimming

4. Options: a. Talk to coach about any changes in events b. If you do not see your name, inform Coach to enter you into meet

5. One day prior to "Due Date" a. Finalize your swimmers entry into the Invite/ Away meet

Home Dual & Tri Meets 1. All swimmers will automatically be entered into these meets by their coaches.

2. The Entry Report will be placed on Bulletin Board, placed on Website, and sent out via email

3. It will be up to the parent/swimmer to inform Coach Axel that they will NOT attend this meet by email or placing a note in his folder

PRACTICE: Swimmers should arrive to practice 5 - 10 minutes prior to schedule start time. Make sure swimmer has: 1. Water bottle 2. Their suit 3. Their goggles 4. Their towels 5. Their personal training equipment ( with name) -goggles & Cap -kickboard, Pull bouy, paddles, & fins

Get your swimmer ready and make your way into the YMCA

There are 3 types of practice techniques you will observe: 1. Technical Training Doing many drills to improve swimmers stroke Lower Levels 50 - 75% of practices Upper Levels 50 - 75% beginning of season 15 - 25% rest of season 2. Aerobic Training Work on conditioning of the swimmer Lower Levels 15 - 25% of practices Upper Levels 60 - 75% of practices

5 minutes prior to end of schedule practice, you may come on deck and prepare for swimmers exit from pool If you have any questions or concerns, see coach before or after practice, NOT during.

MEETS: Know the meet schedule and which meets your coach recommends your swimmer needs to attend. (see attached meet schedule or look on Website)

Attend as many meet as possible that are recommended by the coach, they are set so: 1. Swimmer/coach can work on deficiencies in between meets 2. Swimmer sees improvement

In an effort to assure that swimmers are swimming events that the coaches feel they should swim and to help swimmers focus on a specific technique that is being worked on in practice, the Riptides will have a coach driven meet sign up policy. This policy will help end confusion as to what a swimmer should be swimming as well as keep our swimmers competing in new and different events. Pre-meet: Check out meet information on Website or Bulletin Board Check out what type of meet 1. NTS No Time Standard 2. TS Time Standards 3. P/F Prelim/Final Top 16 swimmers come back and swim race for placing 4. F Time Finals Placed by times swam Entering swimmer in meet see "Meet Entry Policy"

Meet Day: 1. Get to pool 10 - 15 minutes prior to Warm-up start time or when coach recommends a Warm-up time 2. Parents should -wear clothing suitable for temperatures that are tropical inside -bring a stopwatch for timing your swimmer -bring a small notebook to record their times 3. Find Team area, for swimmers, usually in a gym (not in the pool area), set-up: -blanket or sleeping bag for your swimmer -prepare swimmer for warm-ups For parents, set-up: -your chairs or seat cushion in bleachers -save area for rest of parents -your pop up tents (summer only – outdoor meets) SWIMMING 101!!!!!!! 4. Purchase a Meet Program $2.00 - $10.00 This is a program that tells you the order of events, swimmers in that event, and their heat and lane assignments (aka Heat Sheet) 1. Highlight your swimmers events 2. Before or after warm-ups, with a Sharpie, write your swimmers: Event, Heat, Lane assignments on their wrist, arm, etc... This will help them remember where to be

5. Keep your child comfortable during course of the meet -Bring light snacks -Bring 2 - 3 towels -Extra cap and goggles -Games or activities (electronic games, cards, coloring books) -Please write your name on all belongings in case they are lost making it easier to track down

6. A relaxed swimmer is a Personal Best swimmer -DO NOT put pressure on your child to swim fast, they KNOW what to do!!! -Recommend headsets to stay relaxed

7. Swimmers, see your Coach before and right after (before you see your parents) your swim 1. Get strategy for upcoming swim 2. Get positive feedback about your swim 3. Talk about what swimmer needs to work on before next meet

8. TEAM SPIRIT is also a key ingredient for Personal Best swimming; help cheer for not only your swimmer, but ALL RIPTIDE swimmers.

9. At the meet, if you see a problem with the results, see one of the coaches ASAP so they can get the problem fixed. Please DO NOT bother the officials.

Post meet: Once coach gets results: 1. Post results on Bulletin Board and on pdf file via E-mail Check out your swimmers time, place, and time improvement Write down times in a Parent/Swimmers Log book 2. Someone on the Awards Committee will 1. Keep track of the number of improved times 2. Keep track of Personal Best times 3.
