  • Representations of Bisexual Women in Twenty-First Century Popular Culture
Straddling (In)Visibility: Representations of Bisexual Women in Twenty-First Century Popular Culture Sasha Cocarla A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctorate of Philosophy in Women's Studies Institute of Feminist and Gender Studies Faculty of Social Sciences University of Ottawa © Sasha Cocarla, Ottawa, Canada 2016 Abstract Throughout the first decade of the 2000s, LGBTQ+ visibility has steadily increased in North American popular culture, allowing for not only more LGBTQ+ characters/figures to surface, but also establishing more diverse and nuanced representations and storylines. Bisexuality, while being part of the increasingly popular phrase of inclusivity (LGBTQ+), however, is one sexuality that not only continues to be overlooked within popular culture but that also continues to be represented in limited ways. In this doctoral thesis I examine how bisexual women are represented within mainstream popular culture, in particular on American television, focusing on two, popular programs (The L Word and the Shot At Love series). These texts have been chosen for popularity and visibility in mainstream media and culture, as well as for how bisexual women are unprecedentedly made central to many of the storylines (The L Word) and the series as a whole (Shot At Love). This analysis provides not only a detailed historical account of bisexual visibility but also discusses bisexuality thematically, highlighting commonalities across bisexual representations as well as shared themes between and with other identities. By examining key examples of bisexuality in popular culture from the first decade of the twenty- first century, my research investigates how representations of bisexuality are often portrayed in conversation with hegemonic understandings of gender and sexuality, specifically highlighting the mainstream "gay rights" movement's narrative of "normality" and "just like you" politics.

  • Comparing Depictions of Empowered Women Between a Game of Thrones Novel and Television Series
Journal of Student Research (2012) Volume 1, Issue 3: pp. 14-21 Research Article A Game of Genders: Comparing Depictions of Empowered Women between A Game of Thrones Novel and Television Series Rebecca Jonesa The main women in George R. R. Martin's novel Game of Thrones, first published in 1996, and the adapted television series in 2011, are empowered female figures in a world dominated by male characters. Analyzing shifts in the characters’ portrayals between the two media conveys certain standards of the cultures for which they are intended. While in the novel the characters adhere to a different set of standards for women, the television series portrays these women as more sympathetic, empowered, and realistic with respect to contemporary standards. Using literary archetypes of queen, hero, mother, child, maiden and warrior and applying them to Cersei Lannister, Catelyn Stark, Arya Stark, Sansa Stark, and Daenerys Targeryen, provides a measure for the differences in their presentations. Through the archetypical lens, the shifts in societal and cultural standards between the novel and series’ airing make apparent the changing pressures and expectations for women. By reading the novel and watching the series with these archetypes in mind, the changes in gender norms from 1996 to 2011 become clear. The resulting shift shows the story’s advances in the realm of fantasy in relation to the American society that consumes it. Keywords: English, Film Studies, Women and Gender Studies 1. Introduction The genre of fantasy has a long and sordid history in its differences in portrayal between the two media, utilizing the depictions of women.

game of thrones season 3 episode 10 download free Game of Thrones, Season 3. Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama television series created for HBO by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. It is an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin's series of fantasy novels, the first of which is titled A Game of Thrones. The series, set on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos at the end of a decade-long summer, interweaves several plot lines. The first follows the members of several noble houses in a civil war for the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms; the second covers the rising threat of the impending winter and the mythical creatures of the North; the third chronicles the attempts of the exiled last scion of the realm's deposed dynasty to reclaim the throne. Through its morally ambiguous characters, the series explores the issues of social hierarchy, religion, loyalty, corruption, sexuality, civil war, crime, and punishment. Game of Thrones – Season 3 Complete. The third season of the fantasy drama television series Game of Thrones premiered in the United States on HBO on March 31, 2013, and concluded on June 9, 2013. • HBO Premieres New Series Game of Thrones
HBO premieres new series Game Of Thrones Miami, May 2nd, 2011- HBO Latin America announced the May 8th premiere of the highly anticipated original series, Game of Thrones. The new mega-production, based on the novel by acclaimed author George R.R. Martin, traces the battle among several powerful families as they vie to the death for the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. “Game of Thrones is a series that combines an excitingly colorful storyline with a world of reality and fantasy. The production boasts all the ingredients for becoming one of the best series of all times, as well as a new favorite for our Caribbean subscribers,” said Gustavo Grossman, Vice President and General Manager of HBO Latin America Networks. Game of Thrones unfolds in Westeros, where summers span decades and winters can last a lifetime. To the north, an ice wall over 240 meters high spans across the continent, separating civilization from an ominous forest and the darkness beyond. In such a world, kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars and noblemen are all part of a cat-and-mouse game governed by self interest, lust and greed. Consisting of ten 60-minute episodes, Game of Thrones begins when Ned Stark (Sean Bean), patriarch of one of Westeros’ noble houses, receives a visit from King Robert (Mark Addy) in which the King asks Ned to assume the position of head counselor and military commander, with the ultimate objective of protecting the Iron Throne; this proposal comes after the predecessor to the post is murdered under suspicious circumstances. Having accepted the proposition, Ned travels with his two daughters to the capital city of the Seven Kingdoms, King’s Landing, in order to investigate the murder and undertake his role as the King’s Hand.

  • Conceptualising International Relations, Popular Culture, Gender, and How Feminine Power Won the Game of Thrones Amanda Digioia University College London
116 The Queen in the North: Conceptualising International Relations, Popular Culture, Gender, and How Feminine Power Won the Game of Thrones Amanda DiGioia University College London Abstract This article contributes to existing literature on the connections between gender, International Relations, power, and Game of Thrones. Scholars have demonstrated that there is a clear relationship between power, gender and political authority. Politics and world pop culture relate to one another. The arts have been an indicated as being a catalyst for societal change, showing that some forms of fictional and factual politics have a relationship with one another. This article uses existing scholarship on the gendered dimensions of political power in International Relations to show that Sansa Stark won Game of Thrones by repeatedly rejecting masculine power. Instead, Sansa adopts a policy rooted in feminine power (letter-writing, collaboration, patience and strategy) that win The Battle of the Bastards, and, ultimately, the North's independence. By doing so, this article shows that the coronation of Sansa Stark represents the triumph of feminine-coded power and policy, and that the rise of such power in the fictional world of Westeros can be mapped onto the non-fictional political world in a number of different examples. In our real world, Sansa’s non-fictional counterparts stand out in stark contrast to a political landscape littered with political ‘strongmen’, who could be read as sabre-rattling pseudo-Targaryens. Introduction This article argues
