INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS Up to 10 China Scholarship Council-University of Leeds Scholarships are available for high quality international students who will be commencing PhD research study from Session 2009-2010 for study in specified areas of research at the University of Leeds. Applicants will only be considered if they have received an offer of an academic place for PhD research study from the University of Leeds by 25 March 2009. Applicants are strongly advised to submit their application before the end of February (and certainly no later than 13 March 2009).

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

 These awards are only available to citizens and permanent residents of the People’s Republic of China at the time of application;

 candidates should not be currently working or studying outside China at the time of application and must agree to return to China upon completion of their PhD research degree at the University of Leeds;

 candidates must be liable to pay academic fees at the full international rate;

 candidates must satisfy the selection criteria set out by the China Scholarship Council (CSC) by completing the CSC Application Form and CSC Employer Reference Form which can be found between 20 February 2009 and 20 March 2009 at http://www.csc.edu.cn

 candidates must be studying or working at one of the following Universities:

Zhejiang University Nanjing University Tsinghua University Shanghai Jiao Tong University Peking University Nankai University China Agricultural University Fudan University East China Normal University Beijing Institute of Technology Chongqing University Wuhan University

 candidates should wish to undertake PhD research study in specified areas of research at the University of Leeds (see page 2);

 candidates must have an offer of an academic place for PhD research study at the University of Leeds by the deadline of 25 March 2009 (application is strongly advised before the end of February);

 candidates should hold qualifications equivalent to a UK First Class Honours Degree;

 candidates whose first language is not English must meet the University's English Language requirements (please refer to the following website: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/rds/prospective_students/apply/advice.html);

 candidates must not already hold a doctorate or equivalent qualification;

REGULATIONS These include the following (full information on the regulations will be sent to all successful candidates):  Awards must be taken up on 1 October 2009;

 The University of Leeds will cover the cost of full international fees. The China Scholarship Council will pay a maintenance grant, return economy air travel to and from the UK and visa application fees;

 The award will be made for one year in the first instance and is renewable for a further two years subject to satisfactory progress.

METHOD OF APPLICATION  There are two University of Leeds application forms (a Scholarship application form and an Application for Research Degree Study form) which must be completed;

 Candidates must complete all sections of the Scholarship application form, using the space provided on the form and with strict observation of any word limits. Attachments are not permitted and all will be disregarded;

 The completed Scholarship application form should be returned to the Postgraduate Scholarships Office, University of Leeds, Leeds LS2 9JT by no later than 16 March 2009;

 IT IS ESSENTIAL, if you have not already done so, that you should

(i) complete and return an ‘Application for Research Degree Study’ form preferably before the end of February 2009 (and certainly by no later than 13 March 2009). This form should be returned with full transcripts of degree marks to Research Student Administration, University of Leeds, Leeds LS2 9JT. Scholarship applications from candidates who have not received a formal offer of a place at the University by 25 March 2009 will not be considered. (ii) submit the CSC Application Form and CSC Employer Reference Form to the China Scholarship Council as soon as they become available on the CSC website on 20 February 2009 (The CSC will accept applications up to 20 March 2009):

APPLICATION PROCEDURE & RESULT

Applications are logged by the Postgraduate Scholarships Office and sent to the relevant Leaders of Specified Research Areas for initial consideration, who will then forward their highest ranked candidates for consideration by the University Scholarships Committee. The decision on the awards will be made by the University Scholarships Committee on the basis of academic merit and research potential. Candidates can expect to be notified of the final outcome of their Scholarship application in June 2009 by the China Scholarship Council. The University will publish the names of the successful candidates within the University and externally upon the University website. Closing Date: 16 March 2009 Applications for Scholarships to commence full-time PhD research study in specified areas of research at the University of Leeds are invited from individuals studying or working at certain Chinese Higher Education Institutions.

This application form should be preferably typed and the completed form must be returned to the Postgraduate Scholarships Office, University of Leeds, Leeds LS2 9JT or email it to: [email protected] by no later than 16 March 2009. Please ensure that you use the space provided on the form - attachments are not permitted and all will be disregarded. Before an application for a China Scholarship Council-University of Leeds Scholarship can be considered, candidates must have received an offer of an academic place for PhD study at the University of Leeds by 25 March 2009.
