SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING April 4, 2017

ATTENDANCE: Linda Wall, Principal (A) Lalita Tamburri, Co-Chair and Parent Mike Stoker, Parent Shelli Radar – Parent via telephone Lucas Stoker, Student Rep Mary Butcher, Interpreter Sherri Harrison, Secretary

Pro-Grant Update:  Two Saturday parent workshops were held in February. o The 1st was on Numeracy with Darren Holst and Jake Hickson presenting on topics such as . Incorporating numeracy into everyday situations . Different strategies and resources. . ASL numeracy vocabulary. o The 2nd was a Literacy workshop with Jenelle Rouse and Shelley Potma presenting. . How to think about literacy . What it involves with kids . Expanding their minds and how reading and writing becomes part of a larger package.  Resource Packages for parents are being prepared for parents to borrow.  Both workshops were very successful and had approximately 35 participants.  There was great school support, staff support, parent volunteers and a lot of fun learning happened.  There was a little bit of money left over which will have to be returned because our fiscal year end ended March 31st.  We have to prepare a reconciliation report by end of June.  Linda provided Lalita with the application for next year but we can’t apply again because we can’t qualify 2 years in a row but plan to apply the following year with Mental Health as the topic. (Behaviours strategies assistance)

ACTION: Linda will provide a budget report template and spreadsheet to Lalita to draft.

PLAC (Play and Learning Centres) have been opened on all 3 campuses. They have plans to bring in guest speakers on a variety of different topics. The centre is open Mondays and Tuesdays.

PIC (Parent Involvement Committee) – Parent involvement committee symposium was last Saturday but unfortunately Lalita and Mike had conflicts in their schedule but hope to attend next year.

School Council sponsorship of events:  Linda provided the reasoning for requesting Robarts School Council name be removed from the LCD Easter Celebration flyer. o Last summer there was an ASL family camp that was hosted and Robarts School name was on the flyer. This could be a legal liability if the School’s name is attached to an event that isn’t held during normal school operating hours. (Sept – June).

Principals Report:  PSB swim meet will happen next week in Brantford on April 12th.  Mary Z. and the Committee are still holding monthly FAMILY nights. Only 2 left – April and May.  At the end of April, Fanshawe College will be hosting a Girls Rock IT workshop and they’ve invited the Amethyst girls and our Grade 7/8 girls to attend. o Computer workshops, avatars, drawings, how to hack, etc.  EQAO is approaching for Grades 3 & 6 toward end of May.  Grades 8 are planning and fundraising for a year end grad trip.  The Ministry recently sent this out this document. It is their 3 year Anti-Racism Strategic Plan.  Robarts will be hosting DCF in Spring 2018. It Is a massive undertaking and hopefully the School can depend on the Council’s support with fundraising efforts and helping at the event.  Deaf Expo will be held in November and Robarts will have a table so perhaps the School Council can have the table beside.

Council Support for End of the Year Student Programming:  Last year Council provided face painting and other treats for the students at a year-end  Do we want to run Spirit Wear again? The hats were very successful last year so maybe hats and T-shirts? o Discussed providing each student with a T-shirt at year end and/or supporting with gym t-shirts for next school year.

ACTION: Mike will look into a few leads for spirit wear.
