“Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. “

(Philippians 4:8 NRSV)

We praise God for new members who have joined our church in January, and for those who will be joining our church in February!

On Saturday evening January 7th, Ken and Joyce Bailey, and son Tony Gene Anthony were welcomed into membership via letter of transfer from First Lutheran in Portage. This family has moved back to our area, and decided to join our church. Many of you know that Ken is the father of Sheena Vorhauer and Amanda Faight; members of our congregation. Ken and Joyce therefore enjoy five grandchildren at St. Paul’s church, reason enough to give thanks to our Lord!

On Sunday January 22nd, the Grecek family was received into membership at St. Paul’s via letter of transfer from First Lutheran Church in Johnstown. We welcome Melanie and Eric, son Braden and daughter Bella! We thank God you are here and have been participating in the Adult Forum and the Confirmation program. I believe I also saw you helping out at the Food Pantry one week.

This coming month, the Hodge family: Matthew, Jess, Lindsey, and Kathleen will join our church via “Affirmation of Baptism.” We will welcome them in membership on Sunday, February 26 th. This day will be extra special for this family as Kathleen will also make her First Holy Communion that day! Matt and Jess have been attending the Adult Forum on the Reformation, and we haven’t scared them away. Daughter Lindsey was Mary in our Christmas pageant in December. Kathleen was a reader in the Christmas pageant.

And, certainly another reason to praise God is that Patricia Price will also formally join our church in the weeks to come. Patti’s grandson Bear is a member by virtue of his baptism at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh last summer. Patti has been attending regularly and has been a blessing to many people here, including your Pastor.

And thanks be to God for all these good people! [Please forgive me and correct me if I misspelled your name.] We are humbled and delighted that you have chosen to be a part the “Body of Christ” here at St. Paul’s. Welcome!! We are so glad you’re here! We will be having a book discussion on Sunday, February 26, 2017 from 7 - 9 pm. The book is "All the Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr. It will be led by St. Paul's member, Bill Balch. Below is a synopsis of this book from Amazon.com Available through Amazon.com Hardback $16.20 (prime availability); paperback $12.34 from individual sellers, and Kindle $13.99. Available at Barnes and Noble online, in Altoona and in Greensburg, Hard back $17.19 and Nook $13.99 WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE

From the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, the beautiful, stunningly ambitious instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel. In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge. Doerr’s “stunning sense of physical detail and gorgeous metaphors” (San Francisco Chronicle) are dazzling. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, he illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Ten years in the writing, a National Book Award finalist, All the Light We Cannot See is a magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill” (Los Angeles Times).
