USER MANUAL Thank you for choosing FEST! We know that you have many choices in testing units and we are really happy that you have decided on our product. This unit is used to test the time delay as well as frequency response of a DUT (Device Under Test). This unit is also easily programmable to expand the testing functionality in addition to a free-run test with user-provided audio file.
Safety Precautions Before using this product, please ensure that you have read through all the safety precautions that are described below and please ensure that the device is always used properly. The safety precautions noted on the following pages are intended to prevent injuries to yourself and other persons, or damage to the equipment.
WARNINGS Failure to follow these instructions can result in injury or death. ● Store this product out of the reach of children. This device is not meant for children and contains small objects as well as electrical equipment that might cause harm to children. ● Use only the recommended power adapter or compatible product with appropriate rating. Excessive power may cause the device to fail and or injure the user. Inadequate power may cause the device to malfunction. ● Do not open the product. This product is not meant to be user serviceable. Opening the product may damage the product and render it unusable as well as voids the warranty. Always bring the product to a service center if any problems were to occur.
CAUTIONS Failure to follow these instructions can result in damage to the device ● Keep away from spills of any kind. Electrical components inside can be easily damaged rendering the device unusable. ● If product comes into contact with liquids, immediately turn off the device and unplug it from the wall socket and wipe it clean. ● Please use this device only on a flat surface. This device is not meant to be handled while it is being used as there are many cables that is coming out of it. ● Do not operate near strong magnets or large motors that generates strong electromagnetic fields. Exposure might cause signal interference that results in dirty signal.

Getting Started Before this device can be used to it’s full potential, there are some peripherals that needs to be obtained. This product should come with a 9V adapter bundled with it. Some parts that needs to be obtained includes 1. Telephone cable with RJ11 head for connection to a telephone line or a simulator. 2. Speaker with a 3.5mm jack. 3. Pre-amplified microphone with a 3.5mm jack. 4. SD Card that is formatted with FAT filesystem. FEST currently only accept the standard SD card form factor. It does not accept miniSD or microSD form factor, but card adapter can be used. Ensure that there is enough free space in SD card to allow recording (typically 2MB per minute of test). 5. Exactly two audio file named “s.wav” of user choice and “pinknoise.wav” in root directory of the SD card. “s.wav” needs to be 2-channel audio with 8kHz sampling rate at 16-bit resolution, even when the test intended is not full-duplex.
Setup Instructions There are only a few peripherals that needs to be connected before the system is able to be used for testing. The steps for setting up FEST are given below: 1. Connect The DUT to either a telephone line simulator or a real telephone line using a telephone wire. 2. Connect the telephone wire from the telephone line simulator or a real telephone line to the RJ11 jack. 3. Connect the speaker to the 3.5 mm speaker jack. 4. Connect the microphone to the 3.5 mm microphone jack. 5. Insert an SD Card to the SD Card slot. 6. Connect the 9V adapter to the power jack.

Using FEST FEST is mostly autonomous, apart from simple buttons that controls a simple menu. FEST has 4 menu choices to choose from. A brief description can be found here. ‘Initialization Test’ ● Allows FEST to calibrate it’s sensors to ensure that it is the most optimal for the current testing environment. ● FEST is compatible with BK Precision 735 Sound Level Meter. Please only use compatible RS-232 interface.
‘Far-End Test’ ● Sends audio data to the telephone line. ● Receives telephone signal and decodes the signal to audio data and records it. ● DUT has to be present. ● Unit will write mono audio data to “festl.wav”

‘Near-End Test’ ● Sends audio data to the speaker. ● Receives audio data from the microphone and records it to the SD Card. ● DUT will not be used. ● Unit will write mono audio data to “festr.wav”. ● Useful to test external speaker and microphone.
‘Full Duplex Test’ ● Does both ‘Far-End Test’ and ‘Near-End Test’ at the same time. ● DUT has to be present. ● Unit will write stereo audio data to “festf.wav” ● Unit will compute time delay from one end to another. ● Unit will playback “pinknoise.wav” and compute the frequency response of the DUT. The result from the previous two tests will be stored in “fft.txt”. Use the provided tool to extract the time delay result and to plot the FFT graph. ● Test will run until SD card is full or until ‘Cancel’ button is pressed.

Choosing the menu in FEST is simple. When there is only one arrow on the LCD, that means that you are on selection mode. When there is two arrows on the LCD, it means that you have selected and is currently running that test.

Useful Information
Problem: The device does not start up. Solution: Please ensure that the power switch is turned to ‘ON’.
Problem: The Power LED is not lighting up. Solution: Ensure that the PSU is connected to FEST and the wall socket properly and that the power switch is turned to ‘ON’. If the LED is still not lighting up, check that the LCD is displaying something. If the LCD is not displaying anything, please replace the 9V adapter.
Problem: LCD does not show anything. Solution: Ensure that the Power LED is lighted up. If it is not, please refer to “The Power LED is not lighting up” part of this troubleshooting. If the LED is lighted up and the LCD still does not show anything, please call Technical Support or bring FEST to a service center to have LCD replaced.
Problem: Keys are not working. Solution: Reset the device by turning the device off and unplugging it from the PSU for a few seconds before plugging it back and turning the device on. If problem persists, please call Technical Support or bring FEST to a service center.
Problem: Speaker continues playing back even when system is not running. Solution: Check that the working environment is not producing too much electromagnetic interference. Follow with a power-cycle procedure. If problem persists, please call Technical Support or bring FEST to a service center.
Problem: LCD screen displays “Codec not responding”. Solution: Power-cycle the unit. If problem persists, please call Technical Support or bring FEST to a service center to have the audio codec inspected and or replaced.
Problem: LCD screen displays “s.wav not found” and or “pinknoise.wav not found”. Solution: Ensure that the corresponding file is in the root directory of the SD card. Also ensure that the SD card is formatted using FAT filesystem. If problem persists, please call Technical Support or bring FEST to a service center.

Problem: LCD screen displays “SD Card Not Detected”.
Solution: Ensure that SD card is properly inserted. Ensure that SD card is still in good working condition. Re-insert card and follow with a power-cycle procedure. If problem persists, please call Technical Support or bring FEST to a service center for SD card socket inspection and or replacement.
Problem: LCD screen displays “Can’t write to SD card”.
Solution: Ensure that there is enough free space in the SD card. Please refer to Getting Started section for free space requirement details.

Problem: LCD screen displays “SD Card is write-protected”.
Solution: Ensure that the lock switch is not engaged. Re-insert SD card and follow with power-cycle procedure.
