Coursework
Throughout the year, we use the class textbooks and workbooks. We use various other materials and methods for oral and written language practice, including games and computer programs. We practice reading and writing strategies to improve comprehension and communication and to help develop higher level thinking skills. We practice listening and speaking through class discussions and presentations.
Friday is usually game day. Word games provide challenging recreation as well as opportunities for developing vocabulary, flexible thinking, patience, cooperation, and sportsmanship. Some Fridays, read aloud selections explore literature genres, including poetry, fables, short stories, humor and plays.
English Language Standards
The standards tell us what students need to learn about Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Our textbook provides practice for all the English Language Standards. In our class, the emphasis is on reading fluency, word analysis, paraphrasing, summarizing, expressing detail, and formal writing and writing conventions.
