SUBJECT: Extension of the Effective Date for NSF 61 Industry File Review with an Effective Date of April 30, 2014

As announced in UL’s Action Required Letter of January 18, 2013, the following Clauses were either adopted or revised in the Standard for Drinking Water System Components – Health Effects, NSF 61-2012 with the effective date of April 30, 2014:

To reduce the impact on Industry by allowing more time for the necessary process changes that are being allowed by other certifiers, this bulletin announces the extension of the Effective Date for the subject Industry File Review from April 30, 2014 to February 25, 2015.

Paragraphs General Subject and Comment Lead Content Evaluation 3.6 All lead content requirements in Annex G have been removed and there is now a Annex G reference to NSF 372. Annex G is scheduled for retirement 3 years from the adoption of NSF 372. NSF 372 contains testing requirements that Annex G did not contain.

Action required – All products certified to Annex G will need to be re-evaluated to the requirements of NSF 372. NSF 372 contains testing requirements which were not contained in Annex G. Minimum Test Batteries Table 3.1 Additional materials have been added to Table 3.1: Aluminum oxide ceramics, zirconium oxide ceramics, silicon carbide ceramics, ruby or sapphire, carbon graphite non-impregnated, carbon graphite impregnated w/ phenol formaldehyde, chloroprene, PTFE, PVDF, and silicone.

Action required – The test battery for products containing the above materials will be reviewed against the new minimum test battery requirements. Testing will be required where the minimum test battery was not included as part of previous testing. Fire Sprinklers 4.2.4 Evaluation requirements for fire sprinklers and associated fittings have been added to the standard under pipe and related products. These requirements are for fire sprinklers used in multipurpose plumbing systems, where the water system serves both the fire protection and drinking water needs.

Action required – Fire sprinklers and associated fittings will be reviewed against the new requirements. Retesting may be required where the testing differs from the new requirements. Action required – Joining and sealing materials that have been sulfur cured will require nitrosamine analysis.

It is anticipated that all testing and resulting revisions will be completed no later than February 25, 2015 provided that all resubmitted samples are received at UL no later than December 20, 2014.

Revisions to UL Follow-Up Procedures, including deletion of models and specific constructions on the previous Effective Date, resulting from Applicant requests or prior investigation of products by UL will remain in place unless an Applicant specifically requests that UL reverse such revisions. Applicants interested in retaining such models or constructions until the new Effective Date should contact UL’s Customer Service Department immediately.
